What to do and see in New Mexico, United States: The Best Transportation

February 19, 2022 Moriah Teneyck

With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

Sandia Peak Tramway

Ride to new heights on North America's longest aerial tram ride. Sandia Peak Tram takes visitors 2.7 miles or 10,378 ft up the Sandia Mountains. Breath in the fresh mountain air and enjoy breathtaking views of over 11,000 square miles of New Mexico.

The tram is a little pricey but worth it. We arrived a little before sunset and there was a long line. It moved fairly quick although they could really use a better set up to purchase tickets. The tram operators were great giving a lot of info on the ride. There is a temperature difference from bottom to top so a jacket is a good idea. The sunset ride and the city lights from Albuquerque and Santa Fe are a beautiful sight from top!

New Mexico Rail Runner

Reviewed By Lindy0424 - Albuquerque, United States

Even though I live in Albuquerque I have never taken the Rail Runner. A friend of mine has told me about it and encouraged me and my husband to try it. So we took the ride to Santa Fe. I'm so glad we did! The train is clean, seats are comfortable, bathrooms are clean, the scenery is beautiful ( enjoyed the western view the most). We rode the upper level for a better view. The train stopped in Santa Fe close to the Old Town Plaza. You can choose to take a shuttle to the plaza or walk in, which is about a 20 minute walk. We walked in, had lunch at The French Pastry Shop, then shopped and walked around for a few hours. We stopped at Tomasita's Mexican restaurant for drinks and a snack before heading back to the train just in time for the 4:15 ride. It was an all-around enjoyable experience. The rail extends from Santa Fe all the way south to Belen stopping at various cities and towns in between. Check out their website for details. From Albuquerque to Santa Fe it takes about the same amount of time on the train as it would take to drive by car, but without the hassle of the traffic, crazy maze of roads, and parking issues. Give it a try!

Amtrak Lamy

The Amtrak arranged shuttle is $40 USD per person, and two of us travelling together decided to risk it and try for a taxi or Uber when we arrived. Oops. Uber shows three drivers, with pricing from $30 - 43 but no one will take your ride. We later learned there is no taxi service at all in Santa Fe anymore. BUT! there is a wonderful local named Devi who will take you (up to five - she has a Honda CRV) to your location of choice in Santa Fe for $30! You need to call her directly (and can arrange in advance so you know you're getting picked up when you arrive - though the train station, and attendant Julie, make hanging around waiting quite lovely!). Her number (she said I could publish) is 817-996-5189.

I arrived just after midnight. The driver arrived a couple minutes before the departure time, so the sign saying to check in 15 minutes before leaving didn't really apply. I completely trusted the drivers. The classical music was soothing and restful. On the return trip, the automated texts were comforting to know all was well and they were on the way.
