The Charlestown Gallery

Reviewed By 73hlb

The Gallery owner is an accomplished artist and one of the kindest people you will meet. She teaches her unique craft to other local artists and opened this gallery to provide local artists a venue to sell their work. Her work for her community equals her artistic skill. Invest in local Nevis art. The work I bought is a constant reminder of my favorite spot in the world.

Museum of Nevis History

Exhibits regard the history and culture of Nevis, with particular focus on Nevis-native, Alexander Hamilton.

On a recent visit to Nevis, I was excited to see the new exhibition at the History Museum. It's professionally curated and easy to follow, with really interesting information that teaches visitors about the island's history from pre-Colombian times up to contemporary Nevis culture. It's obviously a small museum, run by a non-profit society, but they have done an amazing job and even use new technologies (Augmented Reality and QR codes) which our kids found really fun! And don't worry: there is free WiFi to download the apps for AR and QR codes! Next door is Hamilton House and the new Museum Gift shop that has some great and original items. There's also a great little Café in the yard for light meals and drinks after your visit – so this place is a wonderful way to spend an hour or so. The museum is definitely a MUST-DO for any visitor to Nevis – it's a great introduction to the overall history before you start your tour of the rest of the Island!

Dame Eva Wilkin is generally known as the 'First Lady" of Nevisian art, lived and painted in this restored former cotton mill estate. She was once visited by Prince Charles and was awarded an OBE for her contribution to West Indies art. The site now houses a gallery stocked with prints of her works as well as other local artists; gifts, jewelry, handicrafts and furnishings and decor accessories and more.

Nevisian Heritage Village at Fothergills Estate

The Nevisian Heritage Village at Fothergills Estate, which was once a bustling sugar plantation and cotton ginning station is situated on the eastern side of the island, the village is nestled amid the lush evergreen vegetation on the lower slopes of the commanding Nevis Peak, a dormant volcano that makes a perfect backdrop. This Heritage Village largely depicts the evolution of Nevisian social history through housing. The houses, dating from the Carib Indian era, are replicas and are furnished with antiques and relics of their relevant periods. This includes the blacksmith’s shop, rum shop, and the shoe-maker’s shop, along with the dwelling houses and gardens.

Nevisian Heritage Village is very informative in understanding the history of Nevis. The exhibits are simple but tell the story well. The grounds are a pretty stroll.
