What to do and see in Nazca, Ica Region: The Best Archaeology Tours

April 21, 2022 Jacquiline Darosa

Taking a light aircraft flight over the plains 200 miles south of Lima is the best way to appreciate the Nasca Lines, the World Heritage-designated geoglyphs etched into the stony desert surface. The creators and meaning behind these startlingly precise abstracts and animal figures remain a mystery, but their 1939 discovery launched a steady swarm of tourists upon this tiny town – accessible via bus from Lima, Cusco and Arequipa.

It is possible to trek into the site, but for most people the train is the option. The trip is about an hour and one half and is wonderful. There is so much to see on the trip that you would like the train tp go slower! For most of the ride, the river will be in clear view, but the mountain views are really spectacular.

Nasca Lines – The Sacred Landscape The lines are known as geoglyphs – drawings on the ground made by removing rocks and earth to create a “negative” image. The rocks which cover the desert have oxidized and weathered to a deep rust color, and when the top 12-15 inches of rock is removed, a light-colored, high contrasting sand is exposed. Because there’s so little rain, wind and erosion, the exposed designs have stayed largely intact for 500 to 2000 years. Scientists believe that the majority of lines were made by the Nasca people who flourished from around A.D. 1 to 700. Certain areas of the pampa look like a well-used chalk board, with lines overlapping other lines, and designs cut through with straight lines of both ancient and more modern origin.

After a 10 day Traveling adventure with a group through another traveling group, my friend and I opted for a private tour of Rainbow Mountain! Unfortunately it snowed on the day we reserved our tour; however it was one of our most enjoyable days due to the kindness of our guide Richard. He was very informative regarding the history and culture of the area and people. We were able to see some beautiful sites on the way to and home. We met some local folks, stopped by a lovely place to eat Los Cabanas and have coffee. The food was awesome!! Richard took some beautiful photos and was patient with us when we wanted to stop to view some sights/alpacas!! The time with Cusco Holiday Peru Servicios Turisticos was one of our most favorite and memorable!! Thanks for such a wonderful time and adventure!!

Carlos ensured I got the most out of the Nazca flight by providing a pre-flight presentation on what to expect and what to look for. The flight itself was definately worth every cent. Afterward, I was taken by Juan on a guided tour of the Chauchilla archeological site to see the 2000 year old mummies. Juan was a wealth of knowledge. All in all, a great experience from Get2nazca!

We were unable to come to Peru due to the pandemic and despite emailing the organisers, we had no reply to our request to defer our experience. I was aware of the no refund policy but other organisers had invoked the force majeure clause giving us the opportunity to rebook our trip when safe. I was even more disappointed to receive our trip vouchers for a trip we couldn’t participate in.

I visited with my 19 y/o daughter in JAN 2020. If I were to do this again, I would not do the 8-day, but would book my own accommodations, transportation within Lima, Cusco, and Agua Calliente. I would do a 1 day Sacred Valley tour from Cusco. I would uber it to Otallatambo, and take the train to/from Agua Calliente, to visit Machu Picchu. I would book my own bus service from Cusco to Puno. The bus from Cusco to Puno was supposed to have wifi, and a bathroom, but it did not. I would book a 1 day Lake Titicaca tour from Puno. I did not like the hotels in Lima or Cusco, but really did like the hotel in Puno. It was in a great location. We were often waiting on tour transportation that was running late. There were several occasions that I considered getting an uber, rather than risking missing our next train or flight due to transportation running late. On one occasion, the driver was an hour late picking us up, and he was speeding and dangerously passing cars on the wrong side of the road as it was pouring rain through the mountains. I called out that driver and told him that it was unsafe, and directed him to slow down so that we made it to the train station alive, even if we miss our train. When booking, I thought that Machu Picchu and Lima were going to overshadow everything else. However, the experiences at Lake Titicaca, the Sacred Valley, and Cusco were a pleasant surprise. I see myself returning to Cusco and the Sacred Valley rather than Lima. This was an amazing experience, but I believe that it would be even better if the same places were visited, but 1 day "tours" were taken of the Sacred Valley and Lake Titicaca.

Professional airline, modern planes, friendly pilots and staff. Impressing flight starting from Ica, already the flight across the dessert was great. The lines are even more impressive and they make sure everyone has seen all lines. Not recommended for sensitive people who easily get seasick. We had min 3 people that were vomiting - not really a pleasure for the others.

We ordered the tickets through TripAdvisor, feeling confident it was legit. We scheduled a noon flight on the 4th. On the 3rd we got calls from Samantha and tour guide Brady. They said being able to select a time for the flight was "referential only". That we needed to be ready for pick up at 8:15am on the 4th. As a transplant recipient I have a regime of pills, a wait time and eating and said that was why we had scheduled the noon flight so that would not be disrupted. No bending. I truly think our hotel had six people to go and they just decided to make it a single shot. Weather was beautiful all day, no "high winds" advisory they said "may" take place. So customer service was critically lacking and my confidence in booking another TripAdvisor tour diminished. The flight, exactly 30 minutes from plane loading to touch down left three of the six with bags filling through the flight. The 1st officer and "guide" could not be understood in English and we missed the compass altogether. We enjoyed the steep banking. Mixed bag. The flight was with Aerodiana.

We LOVED this spot...it was the highlight of our trip and we are so glad that we did it! Highly recommend the experience! Our family did not do a guided tour so I can't speak to that. We were in our personal vehicle and drove from Huanuco to Huallay. The drive took about 3 hours and most of it was the Carretera Central, the heavily-trafficked 2-lane highway that links Lima to the jungle side of Peru. We went up to 14366 feet but dropped back down to about 13500ish when we got to Huallay. Huallay is a national park with an exorbitant s/2 (about 75 cents) entrance fee,. There is parking next to the entrance. You can also request a guide for the hikes that they offer...one is a 3-hour route and the other is 5 hours. Our group preferred to just take off on our own...the route is marked fairly clearly and honestly there is a lot of just open plain so it's not hard to get your bearings and head back to the entrance. It was about 40 degrees, I think...our jungle crew was not well equipped--we were in layers with a fleece, tennis shoes, and wool hats and gloves purchased in Huanuco--but we were not too cold. The ground is marshy, so be prepared for damp feet. We also took in thermoses with hot water for mate de coca, as well as snacks. The park itself is amazing! Our kids had a fantastic time climbing and exploring and hiking. Thankfully no one got altitude sickness although we were all developing headaches by the time we left about 4 hours later. We are so very glad that we went!
