What to do and see in Mwanza, Tanzania: The Best Places and Tips

August 28, 2017 Misti Hsu

Mwanza is a mid-sized port city on the southern eastern shores of Lake Victoria in north western Tanzania. With a population of over 800,000, it is at the moment Tanzania's second largest city, after Dar es Salaam. Mwanza is the capital of the surrounding Mwanza Region but it is splitted and actually covers two of the seven districts of the region (Ilemela to the North, and Nyamagana to the South), which are administered separately (they are themselves subdivided respectively into ten and twelve wards).

With some work colleagues over a weekend, I did a 3 day Mwanza to Arusha Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Safari with Shrike Safaris. I was completely impressed with Mark's quick email responses and patience as we finalized our schedule and payments. We were picked up on time at our hotel by Paul, who seemed a bit quiet and shy at first but was amazing at spotting animals and completely determined to help us see the Big 5 (and way more!) in only two days. We did see the Big 5, with the special treats being a pride of maile lions eating a water buffalo, a cheetah with five cubs, a leopard up a tree with his antelope dinner, and three rhinos in Ngorongoro! The Mbelegeti Lodge and Rhino Lodge were both comfortable with very good food. As others have mentioned, the packed lunch boxes are a strange mix of items, so I would recommend bringing some additional snacks to supplement those during the day. On a more general note, both Serengeti and Ngorongoro have good roads, nice washrooms, and picnic areas (one even had a wifi hotspot!), so this was definitely the most accessible safari I've been on (compared to Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana) - I'm already working to get some of my extended family to go back with me to Tanzania soon :) I would not hesitate to use Shrike Safaris again!

This safari was pretty much wasting our time and money. Promises were not kept and timing with most valuable time, gaming , was very poor and short. Time we should already be in Serengeti, we were still collecting camping stuff in Mwanza. Etc, etc. We must even give 200000 shillings for car repair. I was asking some refund from 1500 USD price, but operator was not even bother reply. My only advice is that it is better to stay away from this company.

Sukuma Museum

The Sukuma live around lake Victoria and this museum gives an idea about their traditional ways of life. I found it beautiful, in all its simplicity.
The museum displays, among others, a traditional house, the blacksmith utensils, the drums varieties, and different dance societies.
Everything makes sense when explained by Richard Bulluma, the person in charge, who is a Sukuma himself and is full of love and proud of his culture.
When returning to the hotel, the driver, who did the visit with me, told me he was also a Sukuma and learnt a lot. I could recognize in his happy smile his reassured sense of belonging.

Saanane Island National Park

Reviewed By Alison P

Pros: it was a nice break from Mwanza and you can get fantastic views of Lake Victoria from all angles.
Cons: Very little wildlife maybe 3-4 zebra and some impala and of course monkeys.
Quite expensive considering what you get and see.
Only squatting toilets, they are clean but squatting.
You can buy drinks there but only hot, considering it is so humid would be really nice to have something more refreshing.

Rock City Mall

Reviewed By Time_Tr2veling - Mwanza, Tanzania

Rock City Mall has been opened for less than a year and offers stores and merchandise typical to Tanzanian malls. The number of stores is currently increasing and it is still in the process of fully functioning, as things like the escalators are not currently in use. However, you will find ample parking in the parking lot, with the added security feature of receiving and returning a chit that accompanies you inside and must return with you when you exit with your vehicle, which prevent auto thefts. Near the parking lots, you will find an extensive play area for children, including climbing and swimming arenas, and you can purchase food items inside the play area. On the other side, a brand new restaurant, known as The Cask, has opened and offers a variety of American-style fare, like the best hamburgers in Mwanza, as well as more traditional Tanzanian fare. They have alcohol and coffee bars on the ground floor and plenty of space for meetings on the top floor. Next to it is a ice cream shop that currently seems to only offer fresh fruit juice drinks. Once inside the mall, you will find a good number of banks and telecom stores, as well as phone accessory stores, like most typical malls here. You will also find clothing stores, a lighting store, two supermarkets, several liquor stores, a furniture store, a travel agency, appliance store and a cinema, as well as other stores. The cinema just opened on the 3rd floor and offers 6 movies daily on two screens in modern theatre rooms, as well as concession stands and bathroom services. Access to upper floors is possible from several staircase locations and by glass elevator, until the escalators begin functioning. While the mall is only currently half-filled, there is enough to come by for a visit and to find services you will need during your stay in Mwanza.
