What to do and see in Munich, Bavaria: The Best Sports Complexes

September 1, 2021 Brandee Mangan

Munich exudes Bavarian charm. Beer fanatics should head immediately to the Hofbräuhaus, a hops heaven that’s been churning out the good stuff since 1589. The drinking is downright legendary during Oktoberfest, a celebration of local beers and German specialty foods. Emulate world-class athletes at the Olympiapark, where skating on the Olympic ice rink will make you feel like a champion. The promenade of Marienplatz is perfect for people watching and gawking at the Glockenspiele of City Hall.

Westbad

Reviewed By O3219MRjulias - New York City, United States

Visiting this pool center under the giant glass dome in the west of Munich on a chilly, rainy day in August was a pure enjoyment for me and my kids. Water slide was kids' favorite. They're open daily 7:30am - 11pm. All-day family ticket (families with children up to 14 years old) is 31.60 euro. Relax in the whirlpool, steam room and open-plan sauna area with its Finnish sauna, sanarium and steam bath and open-air cool-down area with plunge pool. Everything is included in the admission price. The Westbad offers the ideal combination of facilities - enjoy stamina training in the 25-meter sports pool or tone up with aqua-gymnastics in the non-swimmers’ pool in a way that is easy on the joints. Dive into the large adventure pool, brave the 60-meter water slide, get carried along by the flowing water torrent or simply enjoy the waterfall. Take it easy in the whirlpool, the steam room or open-plan sauna area which are all included in the pool admission price. The center’s large outdoor pool has the warm water which is enriched with Bad Reichenhall salt water. We had a great time relaxing in the open-air with the Jacuzzi seats and massage jets. The pool also has a lawn area for sunbathing in summer with a naturist zone. The cafeteria offers a wide range of food and drinks for a snack. Facilities include: Adventure pool with flowing water torrent 25-meter sports pool Water slide Two whirlpools Paddling pool Outdoor pool with Bad Reichenhall salt water, Jacuzzi seats and massage jets Lawn area for sunbathing during the summer with naturist zone Sauna facilities Sauna island Sauna for babies and small children Massages Self-service restaurant with areas for visitors and pool users Fitness classes Pool shop Disabled-friendly (easily accessible, shower and WC area in the swimming and sauna areas, interior lift, assisted pool entry, designated disabled parking)

Olympic Ice Sport Centre

It had been here at first. Before all other venues in the Olympic Park. Back in 1967 the Olympic Ice Stadium had been opened, long before the construction works for the Summer Olympic Games began, at a time, when there were still planes taking off and landing at the here located airfield of the Oberwiesenfeld. The Olympic Ice Stadium became the stage for many enthralling showdowns of Germany’s Ice Hockey Team facing top-class opponents like Russia or Canada, the Czech Republic or Sweden. Over the decades it has also been home ground for the top flight Munich Ice Hockey teams like the EHC 1970, EC Hedos, the Munich Barons and EHC Red Bull Munich. Its versatility has been proved not only by hosting the Olympic Boxing in 1972 but also by the Basketball team of Bayern Munich which used the arena as their temporary venue between 2010 and 2011.
