Christian or not, believer or not should not keep you from visiting this beautiful Cathedral. Impressive from the outside - even more inside. If you are lucky - you can see what happens to the light inside when the sun shines through the coloured windows.
No entrance fee and not crowded at all when we were there.

Marc and his team of volunteers give free Sunday afternoon guided tours of this fortress turned Nazi detention and interrogation camp in World War II. They're also renovating the buildings and taming the parkland grounds. The tour - in French - was instructive, informative and disturbing; a valuable testimony to another aspect of particularly troubled episode in history. Marc - je suis désolé d'être parti juste avant la fin, mais mon bus n'allait pas m'attendre. Merci pour un tour exceptionnel.

Artiste de la métamorphose, de la lumière, des osmoses, du mouvement et du rythme, Jean Cocteau va réaliser aux cours des trois dernières années de sa vie (1961-1963) des vitraux d’une exceptionnelle qualité pour l’église Saint-Maximin de Metz. Ce sont 14 baies vitrées représentant 24 fenêtres qui sont toutes inspirées d’une rare intensité poétique et d’une vision prophétique hallucinante en matière artistique. Certes Cocteau n’est pas totalement un néophyte dans la décoration d’églises. Déjà en 1957, ce sera la Chapelle de Saint-Pierre de Villefranche-sur-Mer où il mit en scène les événements de la vie de Saint Pierre. En 1959, il va s’investir dans deux nouvelles chapelles, l’une à Londres (chapelle Notre Dame de France) et l’autre à Milly la Forêt avec la chapelle Saint-Blaise. This site was on the Michelin walking tour and was promising based on the Jean Cocteau stained glass windows described in the guide.
We visited late afternoon on a Sunday hoping to avoid worship services. Unfortunately, their was a concert rehearsal for a major event that evening and not available. We were unable to visit the next day due to tour schedule.

A very nice museum with an extensive collection of Roman artifacts. There are roman columns, and baths. There are various fine art pieces as well, unfortunately everything is in French, and they do not have any translation cards or fliers available. That is a disappointment as you are never certain what you are actually looking at. Nice little find in the city if you like history

I really enjoyed the architecture of this railway station and can see why it has been given award of best French railway station last year (I think). Nice architectural touches inside also. Very good book and gift shop inside. Felt safe walking to and around it as a single woman. Through the tunnel under the rails to the left of the station (looking towards it) gets you to the Pompidou centre,

This Island was on my bucket list and i am so glad we got to see it and go on it. It is very beautiful to look at from a distance. When you go behind the church, there are quite a fee shaded areas where you can sit and relax. The locals like to hang out and talk or to read a book.

This market was not on our list of places to visit in Metz, but as it is located just next to the Cathedral and we were curious we decided to try. And it was really enjoyable experience although I am not a shopping fan. So many kinds of meat, fish, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and specialties from different regions in France! I only regret that we visited it just after lunch, so I couldn't taste those tempting, good looking and nice smelling goodies.

La place de la comedie is a beautiful flourishing square in front of the impressive complex of Theaters, music and opera halls. From here you can stroll along the lovely Promenade on the banks of the Moselle River, watching the city's oldest buildings from the Middle Ages and the Cathedral spires on the skyline of Metz.

This gate together with the city walls was the place I liked most in Metz. We spent a long time here, taking pictures, searching for the best view, excited like kids. I only missed information in English or German.
