Swinton Park Birds of Prey

This is a wonderful centre which offers many experiences for the whole family. Falconry, Birds of Prey hunting, demonstrations, childrens events etc. They also have fun things like Hawk and Bafrn Owl Ring Bearing and Dove release for weddings. The center is found at Swinton Park, but is owned and run by Sophie Abbott. Very much appreciated experience!

As a very special birthday present I was treated to a day at the bird of prey centre which I have to say was absolutely amazing. Mandy, who looked after us all day, was extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Over the course of the day we flew 8 different birds from Joey the booboos owl through to Ellie the Eagle Owl. As it was a special day there were just the two of us so we each had plenty of opportunity to interact with each of the birds and fly them. Each of them has their own character and Mandy was with us throughout the day to make sure we were always safe and handling the birds correctly. We had a delicious lunch at the bistro and a tour of the estate. I cannot recommend this experience enough if you love your birds of prey - it was the most wonderful day and made a fabulous present that I will always remember!

Swinton Cookery School

Swinton Park is the ancestral home of the Earl of Swinton, owned and run by the Cunliffe-Lister family. Set in 200 acres of parkland on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, the castle combines the style and elegance of a stately home with the comfort and exemplary service of a luxury hotel. The Cookery School at Swinton Park has been running since 2003 and has consistently achieved high acclaim, most recently as a finalist in British Cookery School Awards 2012. Located on the ground floor of the Georgian stable wing adjacent to Swinton Park hotel, the teaching kitchen is a light and airy room, furnished in country-kitchen style and fitted with the latest appliances and equipment. The cookery school also benefits the hotel’s location at the heart of the 20,000 acre Swinton Estate. The Estate supplies the cookery school and hotel with game birds, venison and foraged ingredients such as elderflower, wild garlic and wild mushrooms, while, closer to the hotel, the four acre Walled Garden provides a wide range of fruit and vegetables throughout the year.Stephen Bulmer joined the cookery school as Chef Director in January 2013. He is also is widely acknowledged to be one the leading cookery school tutors in the UK, having been Chef Director of the Raymond Blanc Cookery School at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons for 6 years and also run his own cookery school at Brook Hall in Buckinghamshire. He combines his top-level cookery skills with a gregarious personality - a winning combination. ’He is one of my most experienced chefs and a great craftsman – his enthusiasm is completely infectious’, commented Raymond Blanc.Whilst his career has taken him to work at Michelin restaurants all over the world, Stephen hails from Yorkshire and so has returned to his roots. He spent his childhood in a village on the North Yorkshire Moors, with his first cooking job at The Goathland Hotel before going on to train at The Box Tree in Ilkley.Stephen has created a schedule of half day, one day and two day courses at Swinton Park, which are open to residents and non-residents of all levels of ability. Courses cover a wide range of cuisines and techniques, with themes ranging from Flavours of the Orient to Regional French Cuisine, Barbecue Cookery to Delicious Desserts and Tapas to Bread Making. There are also courses for children, teenagers and professional chefs. Guest chefs teaching occasional classes include celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager and number of other specialists running courses such as Wild About Food (foraging for wild edible ingredients) and a monthly Curry Club. We have two courses for Christmas cooking – Festive Fare and the innovative ‘Christmas in a Box’, which includes a meal for six to take home. The cookery school also provides a relaxed, informal setting for Chef’s Table demonstration dining evenings, where Stephen prepares and serves a gourmet meal in front of you. The school is also available for private hire and for corporate, incentive and team-building events.

Had a great experience at Swinton Cookery School cooking Middle Eastern cuisine in a half day cookery class. Set in the gorgeous Swinton Estate in a nice sized traditionally designed kitchen. The chef created a really nice comfortable atmosphere, with the class aimed probably more at beginner / intermediate cooks which was about right for me. The chef displayed a lot of skill and experience and was really friendly and personable offering tips throughout the day. The menu we created was really nice, even managed to enjoy the aubergine that featured heavily, which I don't usually like, so I guess that's proof the food we cooked was tasty and well thought out. The half-day class gave us just enough time to create a light 3-course lunch menu so we learnt plenty along the way. Equipment was all top-notch and plenty to go around in a class of about 12. The only real piece of constructive feedback is that we had to work in pairs, personally I'd have preferred working on my own so I could have fully prepared and cooked my own dish. This wasn't a huge deal though as still got to do a lot in the time we had. Overall would definitely recommend.

The kitchen had everything you would ever need, large open plan comfortable living room and everywhere underfloor heated. The whole building cosy and warm all the time. The beds were very comfortable with crisp white linen & all bathrooms fully tiled wet rooms with all facilities. We also had 2 outside hot tubs great relaxing time we had in these sipping our Prosecco brilliant!!! The standard of cleanliness gets top marks!!!! Our activity time was lead by Laura she explained the plan-of action & important health & safety instructions. We split into 2 teams and headed off. We herded sheep, tractor driving, pig herding, welly wangling, egg throwing and an obstacle course!! What fun & laughter we had it really was a thrilling fun few hours in the fresh air and great to be able to sample farm life!!! Theakston Brewery

T&R Theakston Ltd is one of the oldest family breweries in Yorkshire and home of the legendary Old Peculier Ale. Visit this historical brewery in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham. Experience first hand the craft and skill that goes into brewing our beers, the brewing process is built on almost two centuries of tradition, passed down through five generations of the Theakston family.2013 is a very special year as not only are we celebrating the 186th year of our company's foundation in 1827,but also ten years since we bought the brewery back from Scottish Courage and once again became a family owned independent brewery. Have a pint of our legendary beer in the Brewery Tap - The Black Bull in Paradise, names after the original inn, the Black Bull, where Robert Theakston first brewed our legendary ale and also the site where our brewery stands, once known as Paradise Fields. We always have six differnent Theakston Ales available on tap including our famous Old Peculier served from wooden casks. There is plenty to do and see including the Cooper’s shop where the cooper crafts the wooden barrels – one of the last remaining working cooperages in the country. Leave plenty of time to browse the gift shop full of ‘Peculier’ souvenirs and other Yorkshire delights.

Brilliant ice cream (including one safe for the dog!) A lovely outdoor play area for the kiddies and if it is raining on your visit there is also a great indoor play area, with a viewing area of the calves! A really great attraction but the best bit for me was the vast range of lovely ice cream flavours!
