Took advantage of extraordinary weather in November to visit historical town in nearby Maryland, first colonial capital. Ample free parking at visitor center & museum where one can start walking tour of recreated colonial city. Lots of informative signs and good recreated structures, as well as helpful friendly docents / volunteers. Recreated city center including State House, commercial areas, and sailing ship. Fair amount of easy walking (2-3 km), physically demonstrating separation of church (Chapel) and state (government house). Nearby colonial plantation has a few animals and lots of exhibits and artisans using colonial methods to maintain farm life and crops. Good outdoors experience for families and individuals interested in colonial history.

This is the first monument to Washington built in 1815, they have a small visitor center at the base of the monument and for a small fee of $6 you can climb the 277 stairs to the top. Spend the $6 for the experience of climbing up the well-worn stone steps to amazing 360 degree views of the Mount Vernon neighborhood. I had some out of town guests who are baseball fans so I took them to Camden Yards for a tour. The Oriole's Ballpark is just beautiful and the history and memorabilia are quite impressive; our guide was very knowledgeable; this is a very family friendly tour. My friends, who are avid baseball fans, said the tour was just as good if not better than watching a game. Very reasonably priced and several tours are given throughout the day. Even if you are not a fan this tour is a must see!

I haven’t been here since the pandemic but it’s a great spot for a cheap but unique first date. I usually go in the middle of a weekday so I don’t know if it gets crowded on the weekends. I think it’s the oldest conservatory on the East Coast? Delightful.

After first reading about the Battle of Antietam way back in 1985 as a mere 10 y/o lad, it was so great to finally see the iconic bridge it up close and personal. I hasten to add that I had an amazing tour guide by the name of Justin Mayhue, a retired Fire Chief who personally knows/knew American Civil War authors such as Perry Jamieson (author of “Attack and Die”) and the late Joseph L. Harsh (“Taken at the Flood”). Justin has an incredible wealth of knowledge!

Lockhouse 22 - C&O Canal Trust

Pennyfield is exemplar of the basic types of structures (aqueducts, locks, and lock houses) built along the C&O Canal. The furnishings in Lockhouse 22 are evocative of the mid-1830s to early 1840s period. Lockhouse 22 is rustic with no electricity or running water.
