Marche (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmarke]), or the Marches /ˈmɑːrtʃɪz/, is one of the twenty regions of Italy. The name of the region derives from the plural name of marca, originally referring to the medieval March of Ancona and nearby marches of Camerino and Fermo. Marche is well known for its shoemaking tradition, with the finest and most luxurious Italian footwear being manufactured in this region.

Abbazia di Chiaravalle di Fiastra

The Abbey of Fiastra was founded by Cistercian monks coming from the Abbey of Chiaravalle of Milan: twelve monks arrived on 12 November 1142 and started the construction of the Abbey. The Abbey flourished in the following three centuries, it became one of the most important monasteries in Middle Italy and its lands and properties extended over the territory of Le Marche as far as Emilia Romagna (Rimini) and Umbria (Foligno, Spoleto). The very good state of preservation of the entire building complex will let you admire an example of the typically Cistercian architecture which is based on simplicity and humility, in full accordance with St. Bernard of Clairvaux’s reformation of monastic life.

We went to a music concert in the abbey and it was exquisite. The nearby walks are also very pleasant but it does get quite busy.

Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista

In a small 14-century chapel you can see incredibly beautiful frescoes. The colours are vivid even after so many centuries. The Salimbeni brothers who frescoed the walls were masters of the International Gothic style and their work reminded me of Giotto's masterpiece in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The frescoes tell the life of John the Baptist. At the entrance, you can pick up a description of the frescoes (in English) so that you can understand what episode of his life is being told. This is an absolute must for art lovers.
