What to do and see in Madeira, Madeira Islands: The Best Shopping

September 28, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

Charlotte's CM Studio

I was born in 1971 in South Africa. In 1994 my husband and I decided to move to Jersey. We stayed on the Island for 10 years. We decided to move to Madeira to be closer to the family. For the last 6 years my husband and I and our three boys are enjoying life in Madeira. I studied and trained with Maxi Pretorius, she is a well known South African glass artist. When I visited South Africa, I was introduced to the art of glassmaking for the firtst time. My sister was a lecturer in glassmaking at the Tshwane University of Technology, she taught me the basic techniques of beadmaking. I was immediately in love with this artform. Getting back to Madeira, I started to experiment and in the process developed my own personal style and designs. I am greatly influenced by the nature of the islands, the reflections of the sun on the sea. But my african roots can also be seen in the colours and patterns of my beads. My beads are very colourful and tend to be more organic in shape. In developing my designs, I embrace both traditional and African techniques. The techniques and the combinations of different types of glass are never ending. It's a fascinating medium that is limited only by one's imagination and desire to experiment. My husband, Michael and I have a unique bond, he is managing our Studio in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. He is my right hand and valued partner. He pushes the limits of bead productions. Sometimes I can make twenty beads per day and othertimes much more. I see him as a great asset in the business. Glass beads and jewellery is part of our lifes and hopefully it will give our clients the same joy as we get from the beads. We are in the market with the aim to enlarge the search of handmade jewelery. We satisfy the demands of the women that value the exclusiveness and quality allying beauty and comfort. We had a wonderful art workshop in Caravel - this was a great chance for us to try watercolors painting, without any prior experience. The atmosphere in Caravel is very inspiring, waking up your creativity. We draw nice paintings and each of us was quite surprised with her own talent ;) Also at the back of the building they have a lovely shop with little masterpieces of ceramics, paintings, and other art. Just inside this shop it's easy to spend half-hour or more - and the biggest challenge is to choose what to buy without buying everything ;-) Thank you very much for this experience and I wish you a lot of success!

Kunstgalerie - Wolfgang Lass

We regularly pop into this gallery. There are a wide selection of paintings by Wolfgang and his wife, in addition to painted ceramic tiles. The pictures that Wolfgang does of scenes of ships are particularly good, and one time he even showed us how he constructs the form of the ships. The blue and white tiles by his wife are so very good. Wolfgang is always very welcoming and happy to describe the work he has been undertaking - he has painted several doors in the old town. He often also plays good music. The paintings are updated regularly and so definitely worth popping in from time to time.

The shop was stunning, worth a visit just to have a look. But the staff are great, we had our two children with us (4&7) and she got out a selection of biscuits and let them try them all. They were very generous, very knowledgeable and when wrapping everything up took great care with it all. Would definitely recommend a visit to pick up your Madeira cake.

Restock Galeria Gallery

RESTOCK presents first class artists from around the world in inside the complex of Armazém do Mercado only 50 steps from the Fish/Flower Market in the Zona Velha (Old Town) of Funchal, Madeira. There are local artists and crafters who exhibit along with artists who live in America, Australia, Europe and especially Southern Africa, where we had a gallery in Durban, South Africa for 15 years.

You haven’t visited authentic Funchal, until you have visited Restock! The staff are extremely welcoming and speak English perfectly. I would highly recommend visiting the gallery during lunchtime, because it is a quiet and pleasant environment with plenty of artwork to browse. Restock is a perfect place to purchase unique locally-made souvenirs, authentic handmade jewellery and post cards. And they sell second hand books in English, German, Swedish and Dutch languages for €1 - €2 - I visited because I needed a book to read in English while on holiday. They also display several exhibitions and sell beautiful artwork made by local and African artists that the gallery owners personally select. Go and visit! For 1 minute or 1 hour!
