KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus)

Reviewed By Impavid574

A must-do visit if ever there was one. A tangible insight into the potential for man's inhumanity to man. The water torture cells were somehow the worst of it, but what jars is the fact that the building is in a city centre street which passers-by must have walked alongside while the unfortunates inside were enduring their nightmares. It helps give you an understanding of the very public way Lithuanians express their religious devotion - to get through the Soviet occupation and the Gestapo interlude must have required an extraordinary faith in the possibility of a better life. This is education in its rawest form and not to be missed

Ninth Fort

Reviewed By andTilly - Bratislava, Slovakia

You can walk around the place even if the musem is closed. It takes at least 30 min to see everything just from the outside - and it’s nice to go after hours - less crowded and you get to see it anyway. The area is large, clean and cared for. From the top of the fort (it looks like a little hill) there is a nice view over the city, though it’s a very sad place, knowing that tens of thousands souls ceased the exist here, and the remains lay under your feet. P.S. Dogs are not allowed at all, and there are no trash bins on the site.

Curonian Spit / Kursiu Nerija National Park

Reviewed By Hawk470 - Baltimore, United States

Heading from Liepaja to Kaunas by car, we decided to detour, lunch in Klaipeda, and spend the afternoon in this ravishingly beautiful natural wonder. The short ferry ride dropped us on a spit of land stretching north from the closed Russian enclave in the former East Prussia to almost touch Lithuania at Klaipeda. This unique narrow strip offers many types of natural beauty with distinct experiences on the bay side and the side facing the Baltic Sea. Shifting sand dunes, lovely beaches, pine forests, hills to climb with magnificent views in all directions crowned by those startlingly beautiful Baltic clouds, wildlife galore, and, for a change of pace, the opportunity to glimpse the Russian border, complete with armed guards. The Spit also has several villages with lots of charm, inns, restaurants and vacation homes. The main one is Nida toward the southern end of the Spit. We visited in the off-season, so we avoided the crowds, but enjoyed unseasonably pleasant weather. We drove and stopped to walk in various places, but were left wishing we had more time. Time to be captured by the relaxed seaside pace, time to hike or bike deeper into the abundant beauty, and time to breathe more of that ever so fresh air. What started as a spontaneous, quick detour, became one of the most memorable stops on our Baltic journey.

Trakai Island Castle Museum

Reviewed By Marco_Num1 - London, United Kingdom

Trakai Castle and Museum is without doubt one of the best castles I have ever visited and was well worth travelling there from Vilnius on a day trip. The castle is so incredibly pretty and scenic. There is is a lot to see and do at the castle,if you explore it fully you are looking at circa 2-3 hours of sightseeing to cover it all.Unfortunately,my girlfriend was keen to do this on a fast track,so I didn't get to cover this in the detail that I wanted to. The castle has regal interiors, artwork opulent furniture, lots of weaponry and armour, historical information and interesting displays.I took plenty of pictures, whilst sightseeing the castle.Ticket entry is 8 Euros, they try to charge you extra for a photo permit, which I never got. This permit Is not enforced,so don't waste your money getting one. You can take some amazing pictures of the pretty castle in the background as you explore the area around the castle before the bridge. You can also take a 30 minute boat tour of Lake Galva,before/after your visit to the castle. You can get to Trakai by bus from Vilnius bus station or by train.Either way will still leave you with a significant walk.We caught the bus on the way down and enjoyed a leisurely walk down there. There are a couple of churches you can visit on the way down,a smaller history museum and a I love Trakai sign/monument not to be missed as a photo taking opportunity:)On the return leg we caught the train, which is much less congested than the buses, but more infrequent and a bit further out than the bus station. Trakai Castle does get exceptionally busy,so I would recommend getting there early to beat some of the crowds.

Old Town Kaunas

Reviewed By UriusT - Vilnius, Lithuania

Kaunas Old Town is the heart of Lithuania, particularly Santaka and the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers. The most spiritual, central core of the nation. This coming from a Vilnius resident. The Old Town proper is a distinguished collection of gorgeous and ancient structures and styles, pointing to the complex and diverse history of the city. Going through much renovations and restorations over the last decade in particular, the slow but steady gentrification of Kaunas Senamiestis is increasing at a break neck pace. While not nearly as gentrified and tourist focused as Vilnius Old Town, nonetheless the process is killing of some of the more organic cultural elements of the neighborhood in favor of concentrated capital and tourism.
