Long Grove Confectionery Co.

This is an excellent time to visit. First of all, the inventory is HUGE. Because tours have been cancelled for the foreseeable future, the company was able to utilize some of the warehouse space to display even more product. I ended up spending WAY more time shopping than I had expected as I checked shelf after shelf of tempting chocolate. Today I purchased pretzels, caramels, brittle, Meltaways, nuts, molded creations, and more. Since the pre-noon temperature was already 86 degrees with a "real feel" of 97, I divided my car's air conditioning vent directions between driver and floor and put my shopping bags on the floor of the front seat. Everything arrived home in perfect condition. Second, this is a VERY high quality chocolate. There is no longer any sampling in the store -- as at Costco and others. You can't go wrong with either the dark or milk chocolate. Third, the prices are amazing. In addition, right now there is a 90% off sale, which will give you the opportunity to purchase molded Easter shapes for melting. Fourth, all safety precautions are being taken. Masks and social distancing are required inside the store. There are limits to the amount of customers allowed at one time. Charge cards only -- no cash. You will feel safe and protected shopping here. Finally, you will find the same friendly and professional staff -- happy to be back at work and delighted to greet you. See my earlier review (November 3, 2016) for more details.

When my wife and I were growing up in Blue Island, Illinois, one of Chicago's south suburbs, we were familiar with a candy store with a dozen or so bins of candy that also dispensed fresh taffy apples and chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels. Whatever happened to those kind of candy stores? Well, surprisingly, we found one in Lexington, Virginia, in an ice cream parlor. And we found another one in Long Grove, Illinois. Located at 424 Robert Parker Coffin Road, Ma & Pa's Candy has been a tradition in this tourist-happy community since 1966. "Take a sweet trip back in time" is its slogan. True enough. Truth be told, I spent most of my time at the chocolate case. I sampled some almond toffee and almond butter crunch, then filled a $22, one-pound box with toffee, caramel s'mores, almond bark, coconut haystacks covered with milk chocolate, chocolate sandwich cookies, oreo bark, pecan patties and sea salt caramel. Chocolate, anyone?

Deer Park Town Center

Reviewed By 866TaylorB - Chicago, United States

There are a lot of upscale shopping malls in Chicago's north, northwest and west suburban areas, including Woodfield Mall, Gurnee Mills, Old Orchard, Long Grove Village and Hawthorn Mills. So why hasn't anyone heard of Deer Creek Town Center? Or why hasn't it been listed on TripAdvisor until now? Located at 20530 North Rand Road in Deer Creek, on the southwest corner of US Highway 12 (Rand Road) and Long Grove Road, north of Lake Cook Road, it is an upscale, one-level, open air lifestyle shopping center that consists of over 70 retail shops and restaurants spread over 386,000 square feet of space. It generates considerable traffic from Barrington, Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Deer Creek and Kildeer. Open from 11 to 6 Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 on Sunday, Deer Creek offers patrons a wide variety of shops and boutiques that specialize in upscale clothing, high-end furniture and home decor. Not to mention convenient parking close to the stores. Key retailers include Apple, Ann Taylor, Talbots, White House Black Market, Chico's, Crate & Barrel, Gap, Pier 1 Imports, Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, Very Bradley, Barnes & Noble and J. Crew. Take a break from shopping by seeing a movie at Century Theatres or having lunch at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano, Red Robin, California Pizza Kitchen, Stoney River steakhouse, Panera Bread, Noodles & Company, Teavana or Starbucks. Have an ice cream cone at Cold Stone Creamery. A visit to Deer Creek is more relaxing than the experience at larger shopping malls.
