What to do and see in La Ventana, Mexico: The Best Places and Tips

January 8, 2018 Enedina Augsburger

La Ventana is a small fishing village on the shore of the Bay of La Ventana south of La Paz on the eastern side of the Baja California peninsula in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. The village was founded in the early 1940s by the La Paz pearl diver Salome Leon. When pearl diving became unprofitable, Salome brought his large family by burro over the mountains from La Paz to the Bay of La Ventana to found the village. Many of Salome's descendants continue to live, fish, and work in the village.

I chose sea-doo assist for the calming effect of having someone near you. It was fantastic the instructor was very good and I progressed quickly. I would recommend these guys but also spending the money on sea-doo assist because it can significantly reduce your learning curve.
The instructor quickly realized my kite had a few small holes and my bar needed adjustment so they set me up with thier gear for a couple days while they fixed mine even though I had paid only for lessons not gear.

Kiteboarding is not for the timid. This was my second women's camp where I was hoping to progress more than I did. I am not sure if this was my lack of skill or lack of attention and time on the water but I did not achieve my goals. I think I need the private gentle approach lesson next time! The school is run by very positive people who do try and cater to a large cross section of skill levels! Perhaps the warmer climes of Mexico would suit me better next time!

Planeta Libre have a very flexible approach and are happy to help out with transport, organising trips etc which is particularly useful if you are a single traveller. I was hoping to go on a snorkelling / sea lion trip from La Ventana where I was staying. However there were no trips running so Sylvia from Planeta Libre was super helpful in organising transport and a trip from La Paz at a very reasonable cost. She also lent me a wet suit at no extra cost which was great as the sea was cold ! She is really knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and history of the area and is very much into doing things in an environmentally sensitive way. I would really recommend using this small local company.

Baja Kite and Surf

Really was one of the most incredible weeks. Norm and his son, Handsome Dave (he truly is Majestic), took care of us beginning to end. When starting to kiteboard, lessons are an absolute must (for safety, etiquette on the water, familiarity with the equipment...) These were not my first lessons, but were by far the best to date.
Kiteboarding can be a very dangerous sport, unlike a lot of other groups in the area, safety really was their first priority. The lessons were appropriately paced and guided towards performance ensuring steady improvement. Although we were in the water for over 3 hours a day, we likely spent even more time off the water with them, because they were just such nice guys. They took us under their wing and were able to introduce us to the local life throughout the week. They were kind, patient, and made us feel like we were part of their community.
They are IKO certified instructors and, from what I can tell, they really do love what they do. Without a doubt I will be back.
