Old wooden onsen with just several small tubs. But, it makes this place special like a place in dramas. - The location is south of Yakushima. Bus stop #98. And it's 10~15 min from there. Travelers must keep track of bus schedule if they don't have cars. - Most visitors seemed to be residents nearby. They came with cars. And very few Japanese tourists. - The water is very hot and it's rare for indoor hot springs. - There's one compartment between men's and women's. It can't cut sounds nor split water. - I liked the owner's cats, too.

This is the Hirauchi Kaichuu Onsen, sometimes translated as the Hirauchi submarine hot spring. It is inundated by sea water during high tides and you need to know the tide schedule. Can you imagine falling asleep and then waking up to waves breaking over your body? I can. Hirauchi Kaichuu Onsen is an unmanned hot spring with an honour system payment that helps with the upkeep of the hot spring. It is beautiful both day and night, although one can get quite sunburned if staying for a while during the daytime. Standard attire is complete nudity while in the hot spring. There are no changing booths and wise bathers bring a plastic bag to put clothes in in case it starts to rain. These bags are left up the path beyond the high tide mark. It is enjoyable to bathe in the moonlight as the stars are beautiful to see if the moon is not too bright as there is no light pollution from nearby cities. Bring your own flashlights and plenty of drinking water. Please do not bring any glass bottles, and remember to take out everything you bring in. I would go again and again. Visited 3 and 4 December 2018.

Yudomari and Hirauchi Kaichu are two popular seaside outdoor onsen in Yakushima. Unlike Hirauchi, Yudomari is available for 24 hours. There are men's bath and women's bath. And there's one more walking along the wall. This one is closer to the coast. The temperature isn's high. But, very good to bathe seeing the sea. Better with a car because you'll be able to see great views early morning or in the evening.
