1. Kastilac Fort

Rising on a small reef near the shore, this fort was built by the Benedictine nuns in 1545. It used to be known as “The nun’s fort” and it served as a nucleus of future settlement of Kastel Gomilica. Thee old wooden drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge as the place expanded following the easing of Turkish raids.

Kastel Gomilica was founded in 1529 by Benedictine nuns and is one of seven such forts in the Kastela area. Recently, this middle ages fort has been used as a backdrop for episodes of the TV program "Game of Thrones" that feature the city of 'Bravos". As with all of Kastela, it is a lovely walk around.

This was a great tour that included being picked up from our hotel and dropped back. A very interesting history lesson by a gracious host full of knowledge in wine making, particularly interesting learning about the history of Croatian wine. Amazing wine to taste, great food and the best Olive Oil I've ever had. Definitely recommend!

My wife and I called ahead, strongly suggested, and had their wine tasting paired with a tapas plate. They have a second tasting option that includes a full dinner. The owner's daughter hosted the two of us as we sat overlooking the Adriatic and listening to the splashing water on the shore. We took our time and two hours flew by learning about the wines and wine making in Croatia. The wine was excellent, the food perfect, the hosting great and the walk down the beach afterward made a full, beautiful afternoon. Great change of pace from Split. Highly recommend this.

The birthplace of Zinfandel Wine, the wine, hospitality, and vineyards all very memorable. The owner was both host and doscent and extremely knowledable......knows most of the US Zinfandel vintnors. Enjoyed both sunset and moonrise under a delighful pergola in the vineyard with spectacular views of Split and the nearby Mountains.

Under the shade of 700 year old oak stands this pre-Romanesque church. Constructed in 12th century, this was a place of Christian worship for even longer than that. With the relics of saints it also keeps the relics of Hungarian king Stephen. Another king, Zvonimir of Croatia, gave this land to the Benedictine nuns.

We have been visiting all the Mestrovic sculptures that we can find in Croatia. We visited his atelier and his 'well of life' sculpture in Zagreb and this gallery in Split is equally amazing. You can also visit his private church with more of his sculptures in wood. His works are unique and worth seeing if at first you were not keen on sculpture.

Lots to see and do in Split. Beautiful Beaches, boat harbor. The early morning farmers market where all the locals shop for their day. There is a fish market with all of the day's catch on sale for locals. Art galleries, museums, beautiful hiking trails, something for everyone in old town Split. All within walking distance.

Learning about the Romans and Diocletian was fascinating. It was interesting to walk through the palace and see how the Romans built and constructed structures. We learned a lot about their advanced thinking and construction abilities. We had a beautiful day and would highly recommend hiring a tour guide and learning about Split and Diocletian's life.
