What to do and see in Kamari, South Aegean: The Best Budget-friendly Things to do

August 3, 2021 Agatha Simes

The coastal village of Kamari features the beaches and ruins that are typical of Greek islands, but also boasts unusual attractions like an open-air cinema. Stray from the black pebble shores and head up to the site of Ancient Thira, where the stone remains of houses, markets, baths and temples will impress you with their size and structure. Sip local vintages at the Gaia Winery, then relax at an outdoor café as you watch the sun sleepily drop below the horizon, washing the sky with warm Aegean light.

First off, this cinema is more appealing than most any other outdoor cinemas. There’s a couple drawbacks, but nothing major if you know what to expect and why. A few tips... It’s a cash only joint, no big deal (8€). The bus stops right at the cinema, but be sure to let the driver know. No advanced tickets and ALL members attending the movie must be present at purchase time. I’m guessing the reason is so they don’t sell out earlier in the day because of their affordable ticket prices and then risk people not showing up at night because of one reason or another. That scenario would also impact their concession sales. Not to mention how a half empty theater would detract from the customer experience. This is after all an intimately shared experience where the crowd is part of the atmosphere. Check their website for movie listings. The movie starts at 9:30, doors open at 8:30, try to be “in line” by 7:45/8 to get the best seats. I use quotation marks because it’s more or less a free-for-all pileup at the door, regardless of the line, when they open. There could be better organization by the cinema, but it speaks more to the rudeness of some patrons than anything else. We went on a Saturday night in June and amazingly enough, there were still a decent amount of seats/tickets available for people who didn’t arrive until closer to 9-9:30. Of course, their seat selections were more limited. But it makes me wonder if we could have caught the caldera sunset and still made the movie on time. It would have been really close, but we didn’t bother to chance it. Be sure to eat dinner before arriving since the food selection inside is basic cinema food options. Think nachos, hotdogs, ice cream, and popcorn. It would be nice if they at least added pizza to the menu. No outside food allowed, which is understandable. There aren’t any restaurants in the immediate area either. They do have a full bar, but I would stick with beer and wine based on some of the other reviews I read. Inside, the ambiance is close to perfection. The pictures speak for themselves. The screen is plenty large and bright with decent picture quality. No worries there. The sound system is also up to par with Dolby surround sound. Every once in a while we would hear the faint sound of a truck or bus passing by outside in front of the cinema, but it was never really intrusive. There’s 3 different kinds of chairs... up front they have one row of lounge chairs, which lean back slightly. Then the bulk of the seating are like shortened directors chairs. Finally, they have some bar chairs set up along a counter behind the main seating area and in front of the bar. I wish smoking was prohibited, but unfortunately not. It is Greece though. We had no issues with bugs or anything like that. Bring a jacket if you’re cold natured. The only other oddity to me was the intermission. I understand why they do it (sales), but the movie was in the midst of a scene when it occurred. I would classify this as a can’t miss experience on Santorini if you enjoy movies and are visiting long enough you don’t mind sacrificing one night of spectacular caldera sunsets for another unique experience.

We went to this escape room one evening during a time when the weather was bad and we didn’t know what to do. It was right across the street from our hotel. We ended up staying all night and played all 3 rooms!! It was so fun! The employee (I’m blanking on his name) was wonderful. He was so helpful and took a genuine interest in us. We had a great night- one of the highlights of our time in Santorini!

Ancient Thera is at the top of a mountain and well worth a visit for anyone enjoying archeology . Just a word of warning it is worth the 10euro fare for a mini bus up and down the winding road then to access the site it is a tiring uphill climb to the summit , the stunning views alone are superb and the bus allows two hours visit which is ample time to inspect the remains of the ancient Hellenistic city .
