Amna Suraka

Recently I visited the museum with a friend from overseas. I never thought I would be such overwhelmed. It bears within its walls recent history of south Kurdistan which I have witnessed and lived. But been here was a different matter, a large doze of mixed emotions of patriotism, sorrow, rage and disappointment hit me in a way that I couldn’t come out of it for couple of days. Nonetheless I left in tears for all those young men and women martyrs of ISIS war whose portraits were decorating the walls of the museum. Visit this place, it is a must. You can’t live in this city or visit it without going to the Amna suraka musem.

Syriac Heritage Museum

This museum is fascinating. It tells the stories of the Christian people of Iraq. There is a great clay model of the old village of Ankawa. Did you know Ankawa has been a Christian village for 2,000 years? There is an archaeological site right across the street. My kids really liked the displays. The staff is helpful and sweet. They even dressed my kids up in the historical clothing! We took lots of pictures. So fun! They are open week-day mornings.
