This is one of the few attractions in Hydra. Hydra is easily reached in a couple hours by ferry from Athens. The island is pedestrian only, no taxis or scooters - just donkeys, which was a nice change of pace. Bring comfortable shoes because there can be a lot of walking depending on what you would like to do on the island. The walk up to the mansion is not easy but worth the visit. You can see the entire mansion in less than 30 minutes. Besides visiting the mansion we also stopped at the bakery, had lunch and topped off our visit with gelato at the “Cool Mule”.

Climbed to the top of Mount Eros on a hiking trail in order to summit the highest point on the Hydra. No other climbers. Took our lunch and enjoyed the amazing 360 view!

The Museum is located on the waterfront near the docks. It is small, but interesting. It would help if they had more signs explaining items and the island's history. There was a famous Greek guitarist playing on the top of the museum that night for free, and we attended the concert.

After a tiresome hike in the sun, which takes you through many houses along the mountain and also a beautiful church, we reached the monastery. The panoramic views from atop were spectacular.

Very clean & clear waters. We did not spot any garbage in the water or at the beach. Pebble beach and pine trees. There are plenty of recliners and umbrellas. We arrived late so we just deployed some recliners under the pine trees. We paid €3 each. Practically all visitors and the kiosk attendants came by boat and all left by 6pm. Boat ride to Hydra is about 20mins and costs €12 per person round-trip. Keep the receipt as you have to leave with the boat company that brought you there. You could hire a water taxi if you want to stay for longer. There were quite a few flies you had to drive away from yourself and your food. The kiosk offers soft and alcoholic drinks. They make Greek salads, sandwiches, toasted sandwiches and fruit salads (hint: the place is covered in flies). There were 2-3 tables & chairs you could use to sit down and eat if you wanted to.

Took the 2 hour flying cat ferry from athens to hydra. The seats were comfortable and the ferry ride was pleasant, calm sea. Went for a day trip.
Hydra is beautiful and a peaceful island. Very laid back feeling and the people are are friendly. No cars in the island... so donkeys, horses and bicycles are used as primary transportation.
We did the hike to vlichos beach after our lunch. It took us about an hour the reach vlichos beach. We stop many many times to take photos. We cant resist taking photos of the beautiful views along the way. Hiking is pretty easy, just stay on the path closest to the sea.
Went in early april. Bright sun but windy. Bring yr water and a light jacket will do.
I would definitely recommend to visit hydra and do the hiking and spend at least half a day. Its one of the highlight of our trip!

Unlike other Greek Islands, Hydra can be done in one day tour when you stay in Athens... It will take 1.5 hrs flying cat (fast boat) from Piraeus, and once we arrive Hydra ports, it was an unforgetable feeling look at deep blue sea color with steps of building... I & my wife managed to hike to the hills & didn't regret as we got breathaking view of the port... You can walk around the island as no car in the island (but you can hire donkey if you lazy to walk).. many restaurants & shops beside 3 beautiful beach nearby... Highly Recommended

Hydra (pronounced surprisingly as Heedra), is one of the smallest inhabited Greek Islands and has no motorised transport. A short tender ride from the anchorage in the bay brought us to the town’s harbour, where we came ashore at the dock used by the fast ferry from Athens. The harbour had a mixture of fishing and leisure craft either tied alongside or at anchor.
Bars, cafes and restaurants extended along the waterfront, with some shops and a small supermarket, the latter being possibly the only venue that locals would patronise regularly. All the narrow, cobbled streets that led away from the harbour climbed steeply and it was interesting to wander along the alleyways, with any heading steeply down, taking you back to the harbour. Even hereabouts, the retail outlets generally targeted tourists, and were extremely expensive, some items could have been purchased for considerably less elsewhere. Restaurant menus advertised main courses starting at 13 Euro, so Hydra was no bargain basement on the food front either, a point we noted on all the Greek Islands we visited; whatever happened to the meal for two and wine for under 20 Euro?
Although we did not venture that far around the headland, we were told there was a small beach area and some passengers enjoyed this amenity. Wandering back to the ferry dock, we watched the catamaran arrive noisily from Athens and observed those leaving and joining, a motley mix but without obvious signs of any overt great affluence.
We were a bit disappointed with Hydra, which lacked the character its rustic lifestyle should have oozed.

A few minutes walk from the harbour, we arrived the Andrea Miaoulis Monument. Andrea Miaoulis was the admiral who commanded Greek naval forces during the Greek War of Independence during 1821-1829 and he was the most important man in the Greek revolution. The Monument is on a very easy to walk hill. There are a number of historic cannons left on the castle wall but more importantly, the view of the picturesque Hydra harbour is absolutely amazing.
It's only a couple of minutes walk from the dock so it's totally worth for a visit if you are in Hydra.
