Howden Minster

Reviewed By caropl - Chester, United Kingdom

Lovely historic Minster plus ruins, still in use as the Town’s parish Church and the buildings under English Heritage’ care. Well worth a visit, although at present only outside unless you go to a service. Originally founded pre 1066, the buildings date from 1270-1320. The Prince Bishops of Durham (a great power in the medieval North) used Howden as their base to avoid the difficult journey to Durham, staying within reasonable reach of London. Henry VIII had a good go at it, which is the reason for the ruins! Howden is a pretty little historic town, well worth a wander and the Market Square shops sell a great ice cream!
