What to do and see in Holland, Michigan (MI): The Best Things to do

February 25, 2022 Florencio Paulino

Founded by Dutch Calvinists in 1847, the city of Holland, Michigan, is an outpost of Dutch culture and tradition in the midst of the American Midwest, home to dikes, canals and even an authentic Dutch windmill. Proud of its heritage, the city purchased 100,000 tulip bulbs from the Netherlands back in 1927, and these colorful flowers still fill the city's gardens and parks with color annually, just in time for the famous Tulip Time Festival, attended by over half a million people every year.

This is a wonderful area. They have nature trails and wildlife that is well organized. It is fun to walk the trails and stop at the bird shed or animal buildings. They had a wonderful Halloween gathering. The weather did not cooperate but it was fun anyway.

S. Kamphuis Blueberries

We were in Holland for a soccer camp on a Monday. We wanted to get blueberries while we were out. I am not very familiar with the area so I googled blueberry farms and S. Kamphuis was closest to where we were. We arrived and it didn't look like they were open so I checked online again and realized that they didn't open for the season until later that week. As I realized that, a gentleman came to my window and I explained we didn't realize they hadn't opened yet. He said "we have blueberries, give me five minutes and we will have some for you". Sure enough, a few minutes later, they were weighing and boxing up our blueberries for us! The blueberries were delicious, the price was great, and the friendly service was amazing. We live about an hour from Holland but will go out of our way to get blueberries here again.

Abundance of fresh, local fruits and vegetables, local honey, pastries and breads, including several gluten and dairy/vegan free options (the blueberry gluten free donuts were amazing!). Several vendors had plants to sell. They also had food vendors / trucks. Prices comparable to what we expected. Live music and beautiful weather added to the enjoyment. Ample free parking nearby.

Staff were very pleasant and courteous. Not a bad seat in the house. We called ahead to get front row center mezzanine tickets. Saw 'The Odd Couple' and enjoyed it immensely! Great performance and cast. Very professional. We had a heck of a time finding the place. Do not use Google Maps to get here - you'll be late. Would like to see more signage to guide you.

Great place to bring the family and the dogs. Hiking the trails to the dunes wasn’t too tiring. Beautiful view of Lake Michigan on top of the dunes. The dogs had a ball playing in the sand and one put her feet in the water. Enjoyed it so much that we visited twice during our vacation. Can’t wait to go back!
