You can get there by car, but if you walk up the hill, starting from the harbour, you will enjoy it even more. I loved it all: the catacombs with candle lights, the guides in costumes, the light- and film-show at midnight, the amazing views. I'll be back!

Idd church is an old stone church from the middle ages, thought to have been erected sometime during the 1100s. The church has a rectangular nave, and an extremely large chancel, which is only slightly lower and narrower than the nave. Idd church has a beautiful Roman font made out of pot stone. The altarpiece is from 1665, and is decorated with deep, biblical motives, along with the pulpit. The church also has two crucifixes and a St. Michael figure, both dating back to the Middle Ages.

Rokke church is from the middle ages, but it’s not possible to determine the exact year it was built. It is made out of gray bricks, and are up to a meter thick. The church has several times been rebuilt and restored through the centuries. In 1886, the chancel was removed and the nave was turned to face the east. The last time the church was restored was in 1966, when a porch was built, facing west. The church accommodates 120 people.

The Immanuels church has an equally dramatic past like the town itself. The beautiful building as we see it today is the fourth church to have been erected on the site. The first church was destroyed by the Colbjornsen brothers in 1716, when they set fire to the town to get the Swedes out of town. The new church was finished in 1729 and was called Immanuels church. This was a roomy choir church in classical baroque style. It is said to have been one of the most momumental baroque churches we have ever had in Norway. The church stood until 1826, when a violent fire ravished through Fredrikshald, leaving only the brick walls. It was decided that the new church was to be made using the old walls. The best architect of those times, Cgr, G, Grosch was given the job. The Immanuels church as we know it today was unveiled in 1833, and is the fourth church to stand on this site.

Was unveiled in 1865. The church is made out of bricks, and can accommodate up to 250 people. The alter picture depicts the birth of Christ, and was painted by Martha Schultz.
