Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande

One of many ruined churches in the city, this multi-domed church is often visited by pilgrims seeking answers to their prayers from Friar Hermano Pedro, the beatified 17th-century monk buried inside.

Reviewed By T9604IZmattp - San Diego, United States

Make sure you stop here to see the resting place of Hermano Pedro, Guatemala’s first Saint. He was considered the Mother Theresa of his time, and is venerated as such. The church was damaged and eventually destroyed in Guatemala’s famous historic earthquakes, and was rebuilt in the 1960’s. Fun Fact: Scenes from The New Adventures of Tarzan were filmed here when the church was still in ruins.

Casa Popenoe

Casa Popenoe appeals to the inquiring mind. It prompts us to ask questions about ideas, about passion, about commitment; about history, art, science, beauty, austerity, proportion. What role does each play in human development? In the development of civilization?

Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua

Reviewed By zug55 - Austin, United States

The Quirigua Archaeological park features perhaps the best rock art in the Mayan world--certainly on a par with Copan. The stelae and altars are sublime--the iconographic and artistic qualities of the rock carvings are exquisite. The site also features a small acropolis with interesting buildings, but the site lacks the monumental architecture seen in Tikal or even Copan. This is a relatively small site (completely surrounded by banana plantations) so the average tourist easily can manage the site in a day. I would recommend that you read up on the site before you visit. You also should be able to hire a local guide, It is easy to get there by tuk-tuk from the town of Quirigua or from Los Amates. You could also take the bus to the turnoff for the park, but it is a good 20 minute walk to the entrance. I recommend that you stay at the Posada de Quirigua in the town of Quirigua.

Iglesia Escuela de Cristo

Reviewed By 793LindaC - Moorpark, United States

Small, intimate, very authentic church that is especially pretty at Christmastime when the ceilings are beautifully draped and there's a full-size nativity. It's a few blocks from the much larger Church of San Francisco on the same street. Photos without flash were allowed. We saw no other tourist and only a handful of locals. Glad we stopped!

Pascual Abaj

This ancient and sacred shrine is lavished with offerings of food, candles and the occasional live chicken. It is hoped that these gifts, accompanied by prayer, will bring prosperity and good luck.
