Maori Arts Gallery

This is the BEST place in town to come and get your taonga or your real NZ souvenirs with the BEST price. Lovely staff - that are knowledgeable and friendly and go out of their way to help you find that perfect piece for any occasion, or just for yourself. Located on the water front, grab a coffee and take your time browsing in this lovely little shop - you won't find a better deal anywhere else in town. I get all my gifts there - for birthdays, farewells at work, Christmas and whenever I am travelling overseas to take to family and friends. I myself, have several pairs of paua earrings and greenstone pendants. I love this place!

New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Academy Galleries

We have to agree with every other favourable review and we are so pleased we visited. After a number of disappointments at Te Papa and the forlorn Portrait Gallery (maybe not their fault - their collection is shamefully small) we encountered some really interesting art and a small exhibition. We also treated ourselves to an unexpected, modestly priced watercolour which we found in the excellent shop. It’s possibly the only thing that would have us return to Wellington!

A great place to call in and see some examples of local artists' work. We ended up buying a piece from one of the artists and had it signed. Great place to spend some time.

New Zealand Portrait Gallery

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery gives us perspectives on ourselves and our place in the world. It is home to a growing collection of portraits. Our exhibitions include painting, sculpture, caricature, photography and new media. These portraits of members of our society spur us into thinking about what it means to be New Zealanders - perhaps even to wonder if there is a character that is particularly our own. The gallery is located in a long, open building, built in 1904 as a waterside store. Look up and you can see the pulleys and beams which were used to move pallets and barrels through the building over one hundred years ago

I loved this gallery and the friendly receptionist just made it a wonderful visit with my granddaughter. There were heaps of high quality wax crayons for my granddaughter to use. And even little mirrors to facilitate drawing a self portrait. Most of the current art on display was part of a competition. There was a host of delightful modern portraits. How lovely and we were encouraged to vote for our favourite. Well worth a visit.
