It is located on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, immediately across from Ottawa, together with which it forms Canada's National Capital Region. As of 2016, Gatineau had a population of 276,245, and a metropolitan population of 332,057. The Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area had a population of 1,323,783.

I love this museum! My kids adore it as well!! There are a dozen little "kingdoms" you can visit, each one gives you a stamp for your passport! Ha ha It can get busy, and staff supervision is limited to the crane on the boat. The wifi is weak and drops often! Pokeone stops are all over! Make sure your phone is fully charged before you go!

We were here twice during the last four days, returning today for the special Neanderthal exhibition that opened today. It is outstanding, but the special “Unceded” exhibition, focusing on indigenous North American architecture, is also excellent. The two floors of Canadian history are a great improvement on what was available for view when this was still the Museum of Civilization. The Grand Hall offers the best selection of Northwest Pacific art and artifacts this side of the B.C. Provincial Museum in Victoria, and the Museum of Anthropology on the UBC campus in Vancouver. It leads into the “First Peoples” exhibition, which is also well worth your while. A special treat is the complete collection of Canadian and British North American postage stamps. Highly recommended!
