What to do and see in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria: The Best Tours

January 2, 2022 Carley Gatson

South of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Austrian border lies Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze, rising nearly 10,000 feet and offering gorgeous glacier-top skiing. The towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen used to be separate, but were merged for the 1936 Winter Olympics. With almost 75 miles of downhill runs of all difficulty levels, Zugspitze also has 68 miles of cross-country trails, a terrain park and Germany's first superpipe. It's super cool to say you were skiing in Garmisch, so be sure to spread the word upon your return.

The perfect way to explore the Bavarian beer culture and enjoy an amazing evening of food and fun. This private tour is in the village of Murnau nestled away in the Alps. The beginning of the tour is simply enjoying and learning the history and art of brewing beer while wandering the city streets of this beautiful village. After a few hours of shopping and fun we move to a local brewery and restaurant where the Brewmeister gives us a private tour of his facility while sampling along the way. Afterwards we will be given a test to see what we learned and awarded our Brewmeister's certificate before feasting on a typical Bavarian meal of duck, chicken, pork, and more.

Wonderful tour by a knowledgeable guide before the castle tour! He had obviously done his research and was able to add more, and more historically accurate, details. Lots of "fun" facts, too (I had no idea what BMW stood for or why the logo looks looks like it does. I do now!). He knows all the best spots for pictures and the best times to get them in before the next tour groups arrive. Skipping the line for the castle tour tickets was a real plus. Highly recommend!

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is an amazing place! This merged city sits at the heart of a historical European trade route of the Middle Ages causing an unbelievably unique and blended history. In more modern times, the influence of the Nazi party and the atmosphere of the American occupation in the late ’40s has radically impacted the attitude and culture of this valley paradise. This tour provides fantastic insight into the history, art, architecture, dining, and people of this sublime Alpine city.

Wow, what a fantastic day and tour. Easy pickup, great drive with good communication from our driver. Very flexible tour, no rigid arrangements, no waiting for a bus, no waiting for other people and a nice car. We saw everything we needed to see, had a great lunch in a quaint town and even saw a few things in Munich too! Thanks so much to our driver for the tour.

BOOK FOR ONLY ONE PERSON! THE VIATOR TICKET WILL COVER 1-5 PEOPLE! Hello, I have been taking Tours to Neuschwanstein and the other places for 15 years, I actually lived in Oberammergau for 15 years I don´t think that there are many native speaking English Tour Guides with more experience of Oberammergau than myself, I lived there as a waiter and Bar Landlord for 15 years with 3 Passion Play Seasons. Unlike some Tour Guides I try to sort myth from legend, the Passion Play was not because Oberammergau was spared the horror of the Plague in 1633, quite the opposite, it was devastated. I hope to see you very soon! Regards, Chris Edwards LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO TAKE A BUS!

Inclusions: Air-conditioned vehicle, Free WIFI on board!, No food, but I supply chilled soft drinks and Bottled Water, not a lot of choice, but free!

Exclusions: The tickets to the Castle /entry fees are not included as I can´t know how many will take the Tour!, Meals are normally taken near the Castle to save time and make use of the time available before entering the Castle.

We were so happy that we decided to book the full day Castle Tours with Chris Edwards. He picked us up at our hotel and spent a full day showing us the area, followed by arranging tours to both Neuschwanstein and Linderhoff castles. He reserved our English speaking tour for both castles in advance, making our wait time during the busy summer season much quicker, and maximized our time. Chris’s knowledge of the area and its history provided a great introduction to not only the castles, but southern Germany and Austria. Chis was very personable, and when he learned of our interest in WWII, tailored our travel to show us some local buildings and homes that were important during that time. I highly recommend Taxi Chris Edwards Neuschwanstein Castle Tours if you are looking for personal service, flexibility to your needs, and an informative guide who has lived in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area for over 30 years.
