Cathedral De Santiago de Compostela

Reviewed By PilatesLady58 - Norwich, United Kingdom

The cathedral is an incredible building with its impressive baroque facade and is the culmination for some of a long journey along the Camino to reach Santiago. At the moment it’s best viewed from the outside only as there is major restoration work going on for holy year in 2021 when the work will be completed. It’s still worth visiting the cathedral museum which has some interesting artworks on display. You can also access the cloister and get views out over the square by the cathedral to the surrounding countryside. I’m sure it will be amazing when it’s done but currently the interior is literally a building site!

Iglesia de la Virgen Peregrina

Reviewed By 227ianc - London, United Kingdom

Built in 1778, its location is such that it is externally one of the most impressive churches in Pontevedra, facing onto the Pza da Peregrina. A stopping point for pilgrims who were having their documents stamped here, the church plan is in the shape of a scallop shell and the shells are incorporated into much of the decoration. Otherwise, compared to some of the other churches, the decoration is quite restrained, with your eyes drawn upwards into the dome, and thence to heaven.

Monasterio de Santa Cristina

The origin of the Santa Cristina monastery is full of doubts and unknowns, different dates have been given to locate its foundation. It probably has to be placed towards the 10th century, a time when the rule of San Fructuoso followed, which would later be replaced by that of San Benito. Abbots of Santa Cristina have been known since the 10th century, later donations began to be found in their favor and, later on, royal privileges, the oldest conserved is from Fernando III de León and Castilla (1231), although there are references to other earlier ones. In the 15th century the house would begin a period of decline, with commendatory abbots, which would end in 1517 with a bull of Leo X that formalized its extinction and integration in Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil as a simple priory. temporary and the already definitive of 1835, when the place was abandoned and ruined. Claustro de San Francisco

Reviewed By LoopyLouRTW - Barcelona, Spain

Would highly recommend visiting these cloisters. Our guide was Constantino who told us the history behind the cloisters. He was very interesting, enthusiastic & knowledgeable about the cloisters & the history of Galicia. We arrived 20 minutes before the cloisters were due to close for siesta, however Constantino gave up 20 minutes of his lunch break to talk to us & share the history of the cloisters. Entry is free & is highly recommended.
