My new Spanish home

Reviewed By Annika5294

I had the pleasure of staying at Augusta 1 for 9 nights and it was like a home away from home to me. Firstly the reception team who greeted me - Jacqueline, Miguel and Alba - were very friendly and helped with room/special requests. Everyday I had a great breakfast from the extensive choice of hot/cold buffet with much of the produce grown and made on site. Having a juicer was amazing too! Dinner at Potus restaurant was equally good, the food was simple yet delicious , fresh and often with a Galician (local) twist - I received fantastic service from Gustavo, Vanessa, Alex, Fran, Ernesto and Artem. The Spa was my key reason for visiting and I had expert treatments such as massage , facials with the utmost professional service from Lucia, Cris P, Javier, Kilani and Monica. I recommend however that there is at least a high level description / list in English of the spa treatments or at least a QR code (I think this is in the works) Also a timer in the flotarium would be good as I had to rely on someone reminding me to finish up. Overall the resort lived up to expectation, it has a homely yet eclectic boutique feel, I suggest to the team to consider more English tv channels as the only one is BBC news. Thank you for a great stay and I will definitely be back again!

Parador De Santo Estevo

Outstanding Location and unique venue

Reviewed By Ritabix

Following a fairly hairy drive from northern Galicia - narrow windy roads mainly, we had a WOW moment reaction on seeing the monastery below the level of the road. Spectacularly refurbished and although a hotel (the word HOSTEL off-putting for native english speakers) the peace and spirituality of the former monastery could still be experienced. Arriving on a feast day however the hotel was full of day trippers and was quite noisy and not what we expected. It was explained to us that the hotel is a tourist destination simply to view the monastery etc, there is nowhere else in the area to visit, so this is it! We stayed 3 nights which was too long - apart from some nice walks nothing else of interest nearby except the boat trip along River Sil which was amazing. We were very fortunate that in October the weather was excellent (about 23-24 degrees each day) although chilly at night and early morning. Our bedroom (a standard) was reasonable size with lovely view over main cloister. The bathroom however has seen better days and the safe was not working. We had to ask for bath area to be properly cleaned, the soap tray was also falling off the wall and the safe door had to be replaced. Although these matters were dealt with by housekeeping, no one ever apologised or commented. The building in general was spotlessly clean and some wonderful rooms to sit in and admire the view (which we found ourselves but weren't pointed out to us on arrival). A few odd choices in design. The 'tour' which is available to those visiting the site goes through the only bar/cafeteria area in the hotel. So as we sat to have a snack on arrival there was a constant flow of people walking past the tables (all wearing masks thankfully) out the exit door only to return 5 minutes later or so walking back through again. This room really felt like a café in a tourist attraction rather than the bar area of a 4 star hotel. When 'dressed up' for breakfast it was much nicer and welcoming. Apart from a small terrace on the second floor, there is nowhere to sit outside and enjoy a coffee or drink during the day which is very strange given location and weather. At dinner there is an option to sit on the terrace outside the main dining room. However, it was quite cold at that stage of the evening and there is no heater or lighting to enhance the view. Strange! Next the staff, in general all friendly and very professional especially Daniel . The one exception was the waiter who greeted us in the dining room that evening. Wearing an ill-fitting, well worn suit he barely spoke to us - I felt he didn't have sufficient English to understand what we were asking. The younger waiter who served us our food was excellent. The food was just passable, lukewarm rather than hot and expensive for this part of the country. The menu was limited and so we decided to eat nearby (a great find Meson San Roque) a 10 minute walk down hill from the Parador. Breakfast buffet worked well and good selection of food and drinks available at €18 per person. C-19 protocols worked well here, with a 50 minute 'slot' leaving time to clean before next group of guests. All in all a unique location, some good service, disappointing and expensive food and I suggest they rethink the layout of the 'cafeteria'

A week of Quarantine hell

Reviewed By cumbriatourist

We were taken off the Queen Elizabeth and put into quarantine on the 4th floor of the Plaza hotel. This was totally unsuitable for a week's incarceration. We did not have a balcony and there was only a dressing table and one comfortable chair. There were no usb sockets and the plugs were continental (to be expected in Spain) but when we asked for adaptors (we had packed for a cruise and did not expect to have to use spanish sockets) the ones we were given were not compatible with our UK plugs. One of the main problems was the food and meal times. There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the hotel and they would not provide hot drinks outside meal times. Thus we could only have 3 hot drinks a day. Breakfast was served from 8 am until 11.30 am, lunch from 1 pm to 3.30 pm and dinner from 8 pm to 11.30 pm. I know the Spanish eat later but there were more than 20 English guests removed from the ship into this hotel quarantine. We could not have more tea and coffee even if we were prepared to pay for it. Lunch and dinner were the exact same menu. We did not see any vegetables for the entire stay, the food was extremely greasy, undercooked and nearly always cold. I am sure they were overwhelmed but you could order dinner for 8 pm and were lucky if you got it before 9.15pm - very hit and miss. See attached pictures and menu. We did not receive anything to clean the room with although they did change towels and take full bin bags away. When we checked in although delivered to the hotel by ambulance with a driver in hasmat suit we were dropped on the street outside the hotel and could mingle with other guests at check in. The tv in the hotel only had spanish programmes. There was however free wifi. However you cannot download iplayer or itvplayer in Spain. There was a taxi rank and bus stop outside the hotel.

Fantastic find in Galicia!

Reviewed By Steven V

We were looking for a short break over Easter and thought we'd give Galicia a go as we'd not been before. This hotel looked nice online and it had a spa so we gave it a go. This place is probably the nicest hotel we've ever stayed in! The staff are very helpful, friendly, and very keen to help out with anything you need (Juan on reception was excellent to talk to, though all the staff were great). The building is made of very thick solid granite blocks and has a fascinating history as a paper mill. As you walk around the place, you'll see glass panels set into the floors showing that water still flows under the building as it would have done when paper was still made there. We had a premium double room which was very large (other hotels would call it a suite) and very comfortable. It's a shame that there are no channels on the TV and I couldn't get my phone to connect to it to stream anything. The restaurant is outstanding with some fantastic wine that the waiter knew inside out and made a perfect recommendation for us, based on what we said we liked (try a bottle of O Casal, wonderful). The cafe bar is good and the staff are again excellent, but the very limited wine selection is a disappointment unfortunately, particularly as the restaurant, with its fantastic wine selection, was so close. We will definitely look to stay here again in future.

A little off the beaten track, this was perfect for us! Set in peaceful surroundings, each room is very tastefully decorated, and exceptionally clean and neat. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast was delivered to our table, beautifully presented with very generous helpings of fruit and pastries. I would highly recommend this establishment.

Quite handy for a couple of bars and restaurants with the old town a short walk (be aware, it’s on a hill) Enjoyed our brief stay.

Rooms are clean, spacious, and pretty quiet. The breakfast buffet is varied and of high quality. In addition, you are right on the beachfront so you can’t ask for a better location. Short walk to a range of restaurants although the in house restaurant is very good as well.
