Indeed, this fountain is very nice. Light and sound combine beautifully. But by chance we remarked that the beautiful sawmill De Rat (1711!) was open. Mostly only on saturdays, but now in holidaytime almost daily. This is the only working sawmill that still operates professionally. The entrance fee is only € 2. Really worthwile to see how it works (some wind is mandatory). The windmill principle was invented in 1593 and this caused the first industrial revolution and most of the Dutch wealth during the golden 17th century. There were more than 1000 mills near river Zaan only! Now there are still 1000 in all NL.

We went to see all of the 10 fountains installed for the European Year of Culture (Dokkum wasn't finished). Most of them were really interesting, some were beautiful, some were clever, some weird and one really hideous. It was a really intriguing idea and will leave a legacy for Friesland for years to come. Our favourites were Harlingen (Whale), IJlst (Japanese flowers) and Hinderlopen (The Tree of Life).
