October 28, 2017 Christa Meece

Located on Florida's Gulf Coast, Fort Myers offers its own great beaches as well as being surrounded by some 100 barrier and coastal islands to explore. The shelling is stupendous, and the nearby Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum is inspirational. The Great Calusa Blueway offers 40 miles of canoe and kayak trails.

Koreshan State Park

Park open daily, 365 days a year from 8:00 AM until sunset. The historic Koreshan Settlement is open daily from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Camping, hiking, picnic area, playground, kayak and canoe rentals, boat launch on the Estero River, guided historic tours, Sunday Farmers Market, Yoga in the Park Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dr. Cyrus R. Teed's utopian community of 200 followers relocated from New York to Florida in 1894. Dr. Teed took the name 'Koresh,' the Hebrew translation for Cyrus, meaning shepherd. The colonists believed that the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere. They conducted experiments that seemed to confirm their beliefs. The Koreshans built and operated a printing facility, boat works, cement works, sawmill, bakery, store and hostelry. Education, science and art also helped shape their community. After the death of Dr. Teed in 1908 at the age of 69, membership of his religious group began to decline. In 1961, the four remaining members deeded 305 acres of their land to the state of Florida as a park and memorial. The Koreshan Unity Settlement Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places.

$5 entrance fee/car, plenty of parking and Friendly Volunteers and Rangers abound here. At 1 pm there is free indoor musical entertainment and we all enjoyed it very much.
The walk between the Historic buildings is mostly crushed shells so it is uneven and dusty. There are a few large canopy trees otherwise you’re in Full sun. There are docent led tours ($) or you can simply read the very well appointed signs ( and watch the informative video!) to learn about the people and each building. The history is both fascinating and perplexing ( they apparently believed they lived within the Earth).
There was both a fresh market/antique/flea market along with a Quilts ( beautiful!) and engine show happening on our visit and we all thoroughly enjoyed our entire day..spending about 4 hours at the park walking ( maps available along with clean bathrooms at the entrance) exploring, learning, tasting ( even Koreshan cooking demonstrations) and perusing the markets ( engine/quilt/flea shows this day).
Bring comfy footwear, bottled water, hat/sunscreen.
There is a free wheelchair ( if needed) at Ranger station at check in.. just ask. The Ranger and all the volunteers we met and spoke with were the kindest people. They clearly have a passion for their jobs. Enjoy!

This is a pretty bare bones retail operation for fresh seafood. They have their own boats! Which unload in the back. You can walk around to watch. Everything is fresh, fresh, fresh! Selection varies according to what is available. Pink Gulf Shrimp in several sizes up to colossal likewise the stone crab claws when in season. Fresh wild caught fish- we’ve had snapper, Ahi tuna, triple tail. They pack your selection in ice for the car ride home. Prices are market. I wouldn’t buy fish anywhere else.

Lovers Key State Park

Park is not associated with Bonita Springs Dog Beach. Enjoy swimming, sunbathing, shelling, fishing, hiking, bicycling, wildlife watching, canoeing/kayaking, geocaching and more.

My family came here Easter Monday to spend some time at the beach during our vacation in Bonita springs. The entrance per vehicle is eight dollars. There is a moderately sized parking lot near the visitor centre and store. From here you can rent paddle boards, bikes, buy cold drinks, clothing and other trinkets. There is a quick walk out to the beach on a boardwalk, or you can take a free trolley to the beach a bit further down. The trolley is nice because there are washrooms right close to the beach down there. There is also a stand for snacks and a few shaded picnic tables. We walked down the beach and enjoyed looking for shells and seeing the wading birds. The beach was pretty busy that day, but overall very enjoyable!

Bowditch Point Park

Reviewed By patnjoe2015 - Alexandria, Virginia

We have visited beaches in Hawaii, Tahiti, the Caribbean, and many more and Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island in Florida is right up there with any of them. Bowditch Point is at the north end of the beach with views of the Gulf of Mexico, Sanibel Island, and Fort Myers. It is a well maintained public beach with picnic areas, restrooms, and shower stalls. The parking area is a good size, but fills up quickly during the "season" (Jan - Apr). Concrete and boarded walk ways lead to the beach through the picnic areas. This is a really nice place to spend the day at the beach and have a picnic.

As other reviews have said it is a great out of the way location and beach. Get away from the crowds kinda place with a food stand, restroom/changing rooms. Nice picnic are with tables and grills. There is a pay to park area along with public transit service to get you there. Check the routes and times with LeeTran. This is our local favorite at this end of Estero island. We usually take our bikes and pay to park just off the bridge and ride down. Beach is very large with white sand.

Fort Myers Beach

Reviewed By Sightsee_Eat - Worthington, Ohio

Our vaca rental was a short bus trip down Estero Blvd south of the central high traffic tourist area, so it was much quieter and right across from a public access point. We were across the street from Outrigger Beach Resort and a little north of Charley's Boat House Grill between two bus stops. We took the LeeTran trolley south to Lover's Key State Park, and north to the Publix. To go to central Ft. Myers beach where all the shops are, we took the trolley to the library, which is the switch over to the tram. But mostly we enjoyed the beach, after jog until sunset every night at 6:30. The only put off were the many dead fish on the beach, which we understood were due to red algae. But it was snowing in Ohio, and mid 80s here!

Key West Express

Get away to Key West, America's Caribbean Paradise, aboard Key West Express, where getting there is half the fun! What are you waiting for? Climb aboard our sleek, clean, modern, air-conditioned high-speed ferries - Features sundecks, snack bar, cocktails, and big-screen TVs - and we'll have you there in just a few hours!

Reviewed By Wendy C - Boston, Massachusetts

We booked this boat for a quick trip down and back to Key West in a day. It is a reasonable way to go and given the time constraints they have to work around, they did a fine job. The trip each way takes about 3 hours each, which leaves you with about 4 to 5 hours to cram in what you will. I agree with some of the of the other reviewers that if you want to see more, book overnight accommodations in Key West.

The boat itself is fairly comfortable with indoor/outdoor seating. It really moves along, so if you are outside, expect to be major windblown. Also, it can get cool so bring a windbreaker, sweatshirt to stay comfortable not only outside but in the overly air conditioned interior areas , even only a hot day. They have a snack bar as well as alcoholic as non-alcoholic drinks for purchase. As well, they only accept cash for all your purchases which includes the conch train tickets should you choose to do that.

Times Square

Reviewed By RaeJean M

We spent an afternoon at Times Square. Walked the Pier, shopping, lunch etc. It was nice partly due to the fact that it was post college spring break....not quite as crowded. Took the trolley down which is highly recommended due to the lack of parking. Keep in mind....a trolley ride from the more southern part of island could take 15 min or 75 min, depending on traffic. Times Square on the weekends is also a popular spot for locals to access the beach so if crowds are not your thing, go during the week. Good places to shop for beach wear, sandals, and FMB themed gifts.
