Arcturos Brown Bear Sanctuary

The Brown Bears' Sanctuary is an enclosed area where rescued bears will spend the rest of their lives, one kilometer of the south part of the village Nymfaion, with elevation 1350 meters. The area is around 12 acres long, inside a natural forest of beech, that comprises a typical habitats for the bears.

Reviewed By polygnosi - Chania Town, Greece

I realised that the staff do their best for the bears which looked tense remote and sad. The actual tour of the refuge lasts 15 minutes and the briefing another 15 minutes so as to let the bears calm between tours. Be there as early as possible to avoid the crowds and remember to buy a T shirt to support the cause. When you finish there is a 15 minute uphill walk.

Artemis is a great place to learn to horseback ride and its even for the experienced one who wants to enjoy the trails and take in the breath taking views of the close by village of Sklithron. The owners are so inviting they make you feel that you're part of the family. Their knowledge and expertise are above what i've experienced anywhere. They make you feel comfortable and at ease. I would definitely go there again. Its about 16km from the town of Amindeon. Best Experience I've ever had.

Alpha Estate

''The expression of ALPHA ESTATE'S ecosystem throughout human's expertise and experience is the heart of our wine making philosophy'' This statement, coming from winemaker Angelos Iatridis and vine-grower Makis Mavridis pretty much sums the concept and the driving force behind the joint effort of two pioneers of wine growing and winemaking in Greece that selected the remote Amyndeon plateau, an area of PDO wines in North West Greece to establish and develop a state of the art vineyard driven winery. In the coolest wine region of Greece, at an altitude between 630 and 700 meters above sea level the two partners decided to invest in what is today one of the biggest investments in the Greek wine production over the last ten years. The area were today stands the 85ha privately owned block-vineyard was selected in the early 90's by Bordeaux educated and internationally trained enologist Angelos Iatridis, as the optimum wine growing and consequently winemaking region in Greece.

I am very surprised of how well organized a winery is. Alpha estate visit was really a great experience for us and teach me a lot on how modern wineries work. The Alpha estate winery has been awarded as the best winery of the year 2013 from Wines & Spirits magazine and this is something that you can realize when you make a visit in their premises. We tested some great wines red and white and overall was an excellent experience for us. Totally recommended.

Agios Achillios island

Reviewed By CreteBlue - Athens

This is a beautiful small island situated in the small Prespa lake. The island is accessible through a floating bridge. You park your car and walk to the island, which is full with water buffalos and small churches. It is worth going round the island and on top of it to enjoy the great views to the lake and the surrounding Mountains. There is a also a busy cafe and a place to buy souvenirs. It is definitely worth visiting this island before heading to Psarades, the small village in the big Prespa lake.

Arcturos Wolf Sanctuary

It was created to eliminate the illegal practice of wolf poaching by individuals. The Sanctuary hosts ex-captive wolves in a 17 acre specially fenced area of natural oak forest.

Reviewed By Greekgantua - Athens, Greece

Watch the wolves in (almost) their natural habitat, meet the Greek Shepherd Dog and listen to an interesting brief by the volunteers of Arktouros.
All three venues of Arktouros can be visited with one ticket.
The Wolf Sanctuary is located close to the Agrapidies village (outside the settlement). Take the road to Kastoria and turn left. The road signs are rather small and few. Try to find it on the map in advance.
This is not a zoo and visitors should avoid disturbing the animals.
Arktouros is a praiseworthy organization that deserves our support.

Μουσειο Παυλου Μελα

Reviewed By Peter K

Every Greek should visit this museum which was the final resting place of Pavlos Melas, who was killed by the Turks during the Makedonian Strugglle.
The museum if full of many objects, papers etc, do yourself a favour whilst you are in the Kastoria region, it's a leisurely drive from Kastoria ( around about 45 minutes ). A few kilometres up the road is the Cenotaph of Pavlos Melas ( as depicted by most of the posted images, perhaps they could be posted in another section so as not to possibly confuse potential visitors?? )

Zachariadi's Cave

Reviewed By tliatsis - Athens, Greece
