What to do and see in Finnmark, Northern Norway: The Best Bike Tours

February 24, 2022 Concepcion Newsome

Lying at the very top of Europe, Finnmark is the northernmost part of Norway that reaches around Sweden and meets Finland. This is the heart of Norwegian Lapland, where Karasjok is the cultural and political seat of Sami life. Though Norway's biggest county by size, Finnmark has the fewest people. Alta, the biggest city with just 17,000, is called the Town of Northern Lights for its great views of the phenomenon. Alta Museum is largely devoted to local rock carvings from thousands of years ago.

(26km).This is a traditional lodge that is used in both summer and winter by trekkers, bikers, skiers and hunters alike. As we arrive quite early in the afternoon at Mollisjok, we have the opportunity to catch our supper. This whole area, Finnmark, is an Eldorado for trout, salmon and fishermen alike. Day 5 From now on we are into the Finnmark plateau. The landscape has a stark beauty. Endless hills roll ahead of us as we continue north towards our campsite at Stabbursdalsvannene. Today we experience the high plateau trails that are exhilarating and demanding, as they tend to be wet and often steep. We push out alongside Finnmarks largest lake riding along the east side of Lake Jesjavre. Our riding is on challenging yet rewarding mountain bike paths which are considered locally to be some the best the area has to offer. Tonight we are camping out on the plateau where we experience the true nature of this incredible landscape. Day 6 Another great day ahead as we ride through Livnas to our camping huts at Skoganvarre (45 km).
