Reaching Kaupinoja sauna by public transport proofed to be a bit tricky, but after almost getting lost in the small strip of forest with its labyrinth of little paths that lies between the bus stop and the sauna, I finally made it there. Directly situated at the lake and faraway from the city centre of Tampere, this is a very nice, quiet sauna that offers a more 'authentic' experience, as it seems to be mostly Finns that visit it. Though the sauna was almost full the evening I was there, and there was a private sauna party ongoing in the adjacent part of the building, the atmosphere was very relaxing and calm. There are separate changing rooms (with lockers) and showers (with clear lake water) for men and women, but as there is only one sauna for both sexes swimwear is required, so be prepared to bring some. Both the sauna and the swim in the lake were fantastic, and one can also take a break by just sitting outside, or buying a sausage for the barbecue that's standing on the terrace. If you are keen for a more rustic sauna experience with a gorgeous lake almost to yourself (also a great place to watch the sunset if you are visiting in the evening), then this is definitely your spot.

Levi Foxfires Arctic Spa. A traditional Finnish wood fired sauna bathing experience and open air barrel hot tub set in the Arctic Taiga forest where you may see the Aurora dance in the night sky above.
We have been to Levi on several occasions covering all activities but have always wanted a hot tub in the forest. That has now become a possibility with Foxfires arctic spa. We spent a fantastic afternoon using the sauna and the hot tub as well as relaxing on the veranda eating doughnuts and Finnish specialties. Our hosts were fantastic explaining about the Finnish history and letting us in on the plans for the future. We can’t recommend this place enough to pay a visit.

The only public sauna in Helsinki that is heated with wood.
As a fan of Saunas in the UK I wanted to try the most traditional sauna I could find in Helsinki and this one ticked all the boxes. First thing to say is that no sauna in the UK that I know of can prepare you for the cultural difference in taking a sauna in Finland. These differences are immediately apparent as you walk up the street to the entrance to the sauna, where you will see sauna users (male and female) wrapped just in towels, sitting on the walls outside the building cooling off drinking tins of beer. Note this is not accompanied by loutish behaviour! Sauna staff friendly and welcoming, the changing rooms charmingly original. On getting undressed you pass through what again appears to be an original shower room, before entering the sauna itself which is dimly lit, very hot, multi tiered and to a British tourist's eye resembles something closer to a power station boiler room than a sauna - Great !!! Some points of Sauna etiquette - before putting water onto the sauna coals, check with the sauna user sitting at the highest point in the room first. This was belatedly pointed out to me (politely) when I did otherwise. Birch twigs freely available to enhance this traditional experience. Note there are separate changing rooms and saunas for males and females as it is expected that you go into the sauna naked.
