Adnams 'Make Your Own Gin' Experience - Southwold

If you've ever wanted to create your own Gin then the Adnams Make Your Own Gin experience is for you! This fascinating experience using mini copper stills takes 2-2.5 hours. An Adnams Gin Maker will guide you through the process of making your own gin, from selecting your own choice of the botanicals provided, through to the distillation process and naming, then labelling, your personal bottle.

A small group of five of us taking part in this very informative, fascinating visit to the Adnams Distillery followed by a great session in the lab making our own gin. Yes - actually mixing the ingredients and then, individually distilling the gin to take with us. Finished with a tasting of the basics and different Adnams gins - excellent and with Christine’s experience and guidance the whole visit was punctuated with loads of history and detail of the beer, vodka and gin making processes - loved it !

St. George's Distillery

Making really great whisky in England is paramount to what we stand for here at St. George’s. St.George's Distillery, home to the English Whisky Co. became operational in November 2006 producing its first spirit soon after. We now have some very fine single malt whisky for sale. The Distillery is open daily throughout the year (with the exception of Christmas day, Boxing day, New Year's day), running regular tours of the working part of the distillery. We have a coffee shop and gift shop.

I’m a whisky lover and wanted to see how England’s oldest distillery compared with the more established whiskies. The tour was excellent - informative yet light-hearted and COVID restrictions caused minimal disruption from the norm (use of in-house distilled hand sanitiser added to the experience if anything!). The tour comes with a tasting of the Original and a complimentary shot glass, as well as a £5 voucher, but if you’re serious about purchasing something else in the range don’t be afraid to ask to ‘try before you buy’. There’s a great selection of whisky and liqueurs to meet all tastes, including the more smokey, peaty types that are definitely comparable in quality and taste with their Scottish and Irish counterparts in my opinion. All staff were really welcoming and took time to answer questions and help with the tasting. Whisky lover or not, a great visit for everyone and highly recommended.

Adnams

For those of you who have yet to visit our distillery in Southwold, you are in for a treat! Tour tickets are only £20 per person (over 18s only) which includes a tutored tasting and a little something to take home. The distillery contains all the equipment needed to create a "grain to glass" product taking local barley, wheat and oats. The tour demonstrates the highly precise intricacies of micro distilling and small batch process, as well as the creativity too. You'll be able to taste the house recipes, which we've carefully crafted from a lot of practice from the team. The tour takes approximately 1 hour and is followed by a tutored tasting which takes around 30 minutes. Don't forget to ask about our 'Make your own gin' experiences!

The English Whisky Company

Making really great single malt whisky in England is paramount to what we stand for here at St. George's. Why England? Why not? We have fantastic water in the Breckland aquifer beneath our feet, we have the barley, the maltings, the yeast and now the distillery. We don't add colour, we don't add flavour, we let the barrels do that for us. Our whisky is batch made by hand with no computers, matured in fine casks, bottled on site using our own water and is non chill-filtered. We are really proud of these things and believe you will taste the difference too. The Distillery is open daily from 9am - 5.30Pm throughout the year (with the exception of Christmas day, Boxing day, New Year's day), running regular tours of the working part of the distillery.

We booked our tour tickets in advance over their website for the week of the bank holiday, Currently masks are mandatory on the tour for all. The tour lasted just over an hour with a tasting session at the end. The lady conducting the tour was very knowledgeable and made the whole process interesting and answered all our questions. One highlight of the tour for me was the visit to the barrel house and just breathing in that smell. At the end of the tour you get to sample the whiskey back in the gift shop. It is worth mentioning that as part of your tour each person gets a voucher for the shop of £5 off if you spend over a certain amount. I noted that the voucher doesn’t have an expiration date so you don’t have to use it on the day of your tour. I would recommend this tour but make sure you have a designated driver for the trip home.
