What to do and see in Darlington, England: The Best Things to do Good for Couples

January 11, 2022 Tambra Mccollister

Darlington is a large market town in County Durham, in North East England. With a population of 92,363 in 2011, the town lies on the River Skerne, a tributary of the River Tees. The town is administered as part of the Borough of Darlington. The town owes much of its development to the influence of local Quaker families in the Georgian and Victorian era, and who provided much of the finance and vision in creating the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first steam locomotive powered, permanent passenger railway. The town is often colloquially referred to as 'Darlo'.

Walworth Castle Birds of Prey:- Is a seperate business to the Walworth Castle Hotel - run independently by Dave, Tori (and her mum Gail, who assists from time to time and other staff). They have a good sense of humour, very informative and knowledgeable about their Birds of Prey and Falconry, The Birds of Prey was closed for the Winter season while we visited, but they will still take bookings online or via telephone, email. But on speaking to staff from the hotel, they stated if I see the Birds of Prey van there, Dave or Tori will be there and go and see the Owners of the Birds of Prey who would allow àn arranged visit, convenient to them and myself, (obviously after they had cleaned and fed the Birds of course). Dave and Tori did do this on two seperate occasions, Dave, Tori and Gail are very professional, have excellent customer service, they were setting up a Children’s Grotto at the Birds of Prey location when I visited. They can arrange private hawk hunting days, or walks, displays all seasons, hawk days including winter (but obviously depending on weather conditions for the Birds to fly) Or ad hoc arranged visits (like mine) to see the Birds of Prey in the Falconry location. Various different Birds of Prey, Peregrines, Eagles, Falcons, Owls etc Please contact them direct to arrange a visit or if you wish a Hawk Hunting Flying days pre arrange. They can accommodate other wishes as well with the Birds of Prey. I couldn’t fault "my ad hoc" two arranged visits, if you just want to look around the well kept and looked after birds of prey, don’t forget to give a donation or pay on entry. Obviously money goes towards the upkeep of the Birds. The Birds are well looked after and have to be cleaned out daily 7 days a week. So you will see them arriving in the morning if staying at the Hotel So if staying at the Castle or not, contact them prior to arrival in case you want to book a visit, extra hunting days etc Here are their contact details below and they have a website. Check it out. I enjoyed my visit and have visited other Birds of Prey/Falconry sites in the UK. Dave, Tori, Gail were excellent! The Birds were too! Visited in June with my seven year old Son. Gardens were truly stunning. Thoroughly enjoyed walking around and seeing all the flowers, statues and features. Food and drinks were available which pleased my Son. Easy to find and onsite parking available. Only criticism I have is I thought the entry fee was a little too much.

This is a beautiful castle and parkland but what really stands out are the team. From the person in the carpark to the welcome at the castle, this is the warmest welcome weve ever had at a place like this. The castle is stunning, especially the views across the deer park. It has been beautifully preserved and well informed volunteers bring it alive. The gardens are lovely with lots of hidden corners and sun traps, easy to get away from other people. Lots to see and do and when we were there a lovely Halloween trail for children ????

PLEASE NOTE MY LAST REVIEW SAID Ramside this was in correct. On arrival at ROCKLIFFE HALL GOLF CLUBHOUSE,, Darlington We were greeted with a very welcoming smile from a member of staff noting our Reservation then escorted to our table. Seasonal Cocktails were made, and Ben explained the structure and story, which was a wonderful touch. We had 3 young children in our party of 9!! Colouring pencils and paper were instantly provided which was a lovely thought. The starters of half pint of Prawns and Cauliflower Soup servings that we had were excellent. The mains of Beef, Pork, & Chicken were succulent and veg, good and hot. Struggled to find room for desert but the Teacake bread & butter pudding was gorgeous. The children menu portions were enjoyed by the little people. Our compliments to the Chef & kitchen staff. From presentation to through service superb.  Finally the whole experience was a magical day out as this was our pre - Xmas gathering. Our sincere thanks to front of House team for making it a special occasion xx Definitely 5 star, well done guys.  Regards David and Delia

I booked a cocktail class here as a surprise for my mum's birthday. There was a group of ten and we all had an amazing time. The price of very reasonable and there is so much choice when it comes to the cocktails. You get to make four in total and they also provide some nibbles. Great time and would 100 % recommend.

Darlington Hippodrome

Darlington Hippodrome (formerly Darlington Civic Theatre) re-opened in November 2017 after a £13.7m restoration. The Hippo Lounge cafe bar and three free gallery spaces are open from 10am each day (excluding Sundays).

The staff at this theatre are very helpful and try hard to accommodate customer needs. My partner was unable to take her seat in the upper circle due a medical condition affecting her balance. The assistant manager understood the situation immediately and personally arranged to find an alternative seat lower in the theatre stalls, taking care to escort her down the open glass sided staircases. Very much appreciated. The recently refurbished building has introduced modern amenities into a traditional theatre and is a delight to visit.
