Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Cabusilan Mountains on the island of Luzon, near the tri-point of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga. Before the volcanic activities of 1991, its eruptive history was unknown to most people. It was heavily eroded, inconspicuous and obscured from view. It was covered with dense forest which supported a population of several thousand indigenous people, the Aetas, who fled to the Mountains during the Spanish conquest of the Philippines.

Getting the experience of riding an open 4x4 across the lahar desert to reach the Base Camp was just an awesome start to a great hike. If you're lucky enough to get good guides, they'll tell of you scientific facts, history, and ancient lore as you trek along wonderful paths, each holding curiosities unique to each other the higher and further you go. You get to look at strange rock formations, geological calendars told by split earth, boulders the size of houses sitting as they have been since being spewed from the volcano's very first eruption. You get splash into cold river water, and drink spring water sourced from massive seeping rocks that collect and filter rainwater.
And then finally, the crater lake.
The fresh breeze, the sparkling lake, the clouds so close they scrape the summit, and the sheer size of the volcano's mouth.
It was wonderful. Take a hike (literally) and see for yourself.

About an hour walk uphill is all worth it when you get to see Ditumabo Falls (Motherfalls as we call her ☺). Very cold water but very refreshing when you get to dip to it. The mist around makes it very enchanting and magical. Surely one experience that goes inyo the treasure chest!

Sabang Beach

The beach was just right at the back of my rented cottage in Old Parola. Generally, it was good for Surfing (which I didn't do) and for swimming (which I enthusiastically did). Though, there are garbage that littered the stretch of sand, and even on the waters itself. Maybe the local government can do something about this?

Dicasalarin Cove

Drove to Dicasalarin cove to check out its white sandy beach. Hesitated to pay PhP300/head as we got there at 3pm and were advised that closing time is at 5pm only.
Of course, I negotiated to stay until 6pm to make our brief visit worthwhile.
The private resort is owned by the Angaras and there you'll find villas that are basically off limits to guests but cottages were open and were all over the place for shade.
Common shower areas and toilets were also available.
The highlight of our visit was the lighthouse on the cliff where we had to take a steep flight of stairs (about 170 steps) to get to the foot of the lighthouse.
The view from the cliff was breathtaking and had easily justified what we paid for!

Mount Samat National Shrine - Dambana ng Kagitingan

A fitting memorial to the men who gave so much in the defense of the Philippines against Japanese aggression in WWII. Filipino and American service members and civilians are honored here, and in fitting tribute.
Only 30 php entrance fee, which is cheap, and the park is clean and well maintained. It's about 8km to hike the entire park, or can be bicycled.
The Cross is immense and can be seen for miles as you approach the park. I visited in Spetember 2017 and the elevator to the top was being replaced so I could not go up, but I bet the view is stunning for those that can.

Sacred Relic of The True Cross

Reviewed By oyette2013 - cainta, Philippines

Together with my former colleagues from Cainta municipality, we went to this so called sacred relic of the true cross in San Jose, Tarlac. It was a 2hrs journey with private vehicle. We left Cainta at 6am and arrived in the place just in time for the first mass celebration. I advised that you prepare ahead your petition letter so you can write everything that you need to ask from God. Paper and envelope were provided but you need to have a pen at hand. Basically, after you have written your personal petitions/wish, you have to put it in an envelope together with any amount of money as an offering. You keep it, then offered it yourself during the offertory part of the mass. I find the place very solemn and i just love the music being played and sung by the monastic priest. As the holy week is fast approaching, the place is ideal for a family gathering while doing spiritual journey together.

If one is looking to escape the hurly-burly of Manila, one can hardly do better than this. Reachable only by boat, or by a path over the hills, it was a great spot to relax, with me spending most of my time in a g-string. The boat trip out is a good way to see a handful if the more obscure Islands that make up this vast archipelago. Tents can be provided, but one does need to bring most of one's own provisions.

The church was old but well preserved. We were able to meet with the priest after mass and he said a prayer with us. The church is rich in history.
