Fantastic place in the true sense of the world. Serene and peaceful and a great escape from the real world. It is hard to explain how a group of rocks and Baobabs surrounded by nothing can be so magical, but it is. The excellent community project based at Mmatshumo will get you there if you lack a 4x4 at very reasonable rates. The facilities are basic but match the place itself. Just be aware that you need to be self-sustaining in terms of food and water, although firewood is available.

Beautiful place Moremi Gorge, like an oasis in the desert. From the restaurant you have a breathtaking view. The climb up on the hills is an nice hike with wonderful fresh water streams and the waterfalls on the rockterraces on the way up were magnificant. It is quite a climb but worthwile for the experience and scenery you get back for it. Only the groups were quite big. On top you see the vultures flying over.

Baines Baobab is an extraordinary place with large Baobab trees sitting on the edge of an extensive salt pan. Camp sites are situated around the pan but are miles apart. Each site is clean, and has a long drop toilet and bucket shower, but take your own water. We camped here for one night after staying on Ntwetwe pan and it was a great experience. We were only slightly phased by finding lion spore on the ground in front of the truck after we had set up camp. We expected to have a disturbed night but actually had a good night’s sleep in perfect peace. The drive into Baines is currently (September 2019) rather challenging, the long road in has deep sand and once heading towards the pan we had an extended wait while some trucks ahead of us helped release another which was axle deep. It was necessary to drive for extended periods in low ratio so go with a full tank. We had wanted to go to the waterhole to the north of the park, and in fact drove part of the way there. However we had to turn back as the sand was far too deep and soft to venture any further. We were in serious danger of being bogged down. As we were a lone vehicle, with little other traffic, we decided that the risk of an extended stop in 38 degrees was too much. The camp area was great, remote from other sites, well swept and with a long drop toilet and shower. Of course, there is no water, but we carried our own. We enjoyed our stay at Baines, would we go back. Indeed yes, but probably at a different time of year.

What an experience, wild, flat and inhospitable but seen from a quad bike with night falling, open fires, a BBQ on the sand and a night under the stars (and the clearest, brightest night sky I have ever seen) made this a truly unforgettable experience of Africa at its very best. Just go.

Having seen one lonely white rhino in Moremi where they are struggling to reintroduce them, it was especially wonderful to see so many here as part of a successful programme of conservation of white and black rhino. The two hour evening guided tour was thrilling.

We visited this huge sanctuary at sunset and were overwhelmed by the thousands of flamingos. An very impressive spectacle. Otherwise we didn't see many birds.
