The first Castle in Tarragona, Catalonia by 11th Century. Very interesting historical medieval castle. Appropriate by the whole family. Wholesome panoramic view of the Ebro River( Río Ebro). Affordable entrance fee and convenient souvenir store.

Walking up from the Hotel Emporda is a treat in itself. There is a 3.5km footpath all around the perimiter of the fort. Well worth the walk with marvellous view. Tak water, the walk lasts around 60 to 90 minutes depending on how often you stop. DIRECTIONS - go to the Hotel Emporda - take the road opposite and follow to the top. At the top there is a T junction - turn left - follow the road then dirt track up the hill. You come out at the car park / main entrance. Lovely healthy walk

The castle of Montsoriu, located in the eastern sector of the Montseny Natural Park and Reserve of the Biosphere, is one of the most relevant examples of medieval military architecture in the Mediterranean region, and it is considered the best Gothic castle in Catalonia. Archaeological and reconstruction work begun at the end of the 20th century has made possible the recovery of a considerable part of the splendor of a castle with over 1,000 years of history, that was described in the 13th century by royal chronicler Bernat Desclot as one of the most beautiful and noble castles in the world. In the mid-14th century viscount Bernat II of Cabrera, admiral and counselor of King Pere III el Cerimonios, transformed Montsoriu castle into a magnificent and completely unassailable Gothic castle palace.

It was 40 degrees C today but it didn't stop us making our way up the hill using the elevator accessed off main street. We even climbed the 238 stairs for superb views over Lleida from the top of the bell tower. The cathedral itself is a fascinating place. Still standing and looking good but the ravages of so many wars, battles and misuse have made there mark. Part of the fascination of the place though.

A great choice, lovely walk up to the top with great views over the town and coastline, for the less able there is a shuttle bus/train to get you up and down, restaurant/bar and restrooms at the top

You definitely need good shoes ours was a family pilgrimage to honour my father in law who lived in L’Escala for the last 40 years. Castle d Montgrí is an iconic landmark seen from miles around . We climbed on a beautiful January day blue skies and sunshine, without my sons help I would not have made it it’s a steep rocky climb and coming down I turned my ankle a bit still sore now .However young families hikers and people older than me were up the top too very pleased to have achieved it amazing views don’t do the battlements if you suffer from vertigo though just love the Costa Brava Catalan xxx

We drove up to the castle ruins on the mountain of St Joan, where the 13th century Castillo de San Juan, was strategically perched. Once a strategic point for defending the city, it was not surprising with its commanding views of the Costa Brava below. Sergio told us that over the years its walls have seen hoards of pirates. The castle is located in the Punta de Frenals, and dates from the eleventh century. It was listed as a Cultural Site in 1949. The foundations of the main tower, the eastern wall and some remains of the south side are the only remains of the castle today. The entire area provided excellent views over Blanes, its long sandy beaches and the bay. Nearby the lovely Chapel of St John the Baptist sits perched high above the sea with views of the surrounding mountains and the city below.

The walk up to this castle, whilst beautiful, is not a quick or an easy one. That said, this castle and nearby hermitage are beautifully preserved. The castle is wonderfully preserved and it is still possible to climb up the tower and take in the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
