What to do and see in California, United States: The Best Waterfalls

July 16, 2021 Kaleigh Reichenbach

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

Cataract Falls

We went on the short hike (3.3 miles round trip) to the picnic grounds at the top of the trailhead. We passed a several small waterfalls and swimming holes. Being that this was August, the stream and waterfalls were robust, but they were still running and beautiful. This is a moderate hike, but is quite the uphill climb. It's a great workout! The trail is well kept and there are a lot of built in stairs (either railroad ties or stone), which make the climb and decent manageable. I will say my knees were barking at me by the end of the hike though. I would highly recommend this beautiful, moderately challenging hike. Parking is limited (some roadside space at trailhead or up road). There is a port-a-potty at the trailhead...but boy was it scary! Bring TP and some hand wipes just to use there.

Bridalveil Falls

Landmark waterfall located in Yosemite.

A beautiful waterfall! Catch it in the right light and it can look like a firefall. It is a short and easy hike to the viewing area. The fall is very beautiful and you will probably get hit with the spray and mist of it. This is especially nice on a hot day. Beware: don’t go beyond the railings. Many have been injured and a couple even killed climbing over the rocks( wet polished granite with moss). It is perfectly safe and enjoyable from the viewing area. Unfortunately this year (2020) the parking lot and trail are closed. The fall can be seen from the road or at other points in the valley.

Alamere Falls

Spectacular 40-foot waterfall, considered to be one of the rare examples of ocean bluff falls in the world.

Reviewed By Explorer767135 - Mountain View, United States

As many people have written here there are 2 paths to this spectacular view. We did both ways and to be honest I was scared on the way back using the short cut. It did cut down significant miles from our hike but tread carefully!

McCloud Falls

The three falls may be visited within an hour.

Reviewed By 216md - Clemency, Luxembourg

This is a nice walk to witness wildlife and walk on a mostly shady path (so good when the weather is hot!). The falls are on three levels with swimming possibilities in many places. The toilet at the lowest levels is just simply disgusting but if you can wait, the next ones are decent - walking towards the middle falls. The nature is beautiful and it is usually not too crowded. We really enjoyed it.

Yosemite Falls

The fifth tallest waterfall in the world, Yosemite Falls is the centerpiece of Yosemite National Park.

Reviewed By ELKW

Yosemite falls consist of Upper and Lower fall, I think the Upper fall is more powerful, more impressive, but if you just look at the Lower fall, it is also beautiful and fabulous. You can see the falls in many spot, e.g. in the Cook's meadow loop, swinging bridge, Yosemite falls trail, Glacier point, etc. You can view the falls from different angles at different place, and it's worth to see the falls from different view at different place. It has the most water in the Spring and early summer, while the fall may dry out in late summer, so better plan to visit it in Spring and early summer.

Vernal Fall

Though not as tall as Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall is popular for the green foliage that surrounds it year-round and the rainbow mist it produces as the water cascades.

I have not worked out in the past 4 years but yet I was able to do this without struggling and I was carrying 1 Gallons of water on my back. Wear good shoes with plenty of traction. There is NO SOCIAL DISTANCING and 25 % of the people were wearing masks. Allow 2-3 hours to do the regular loop. The way back down brings you down the hill a different way from the way up. Beware bc it can be steep and those not used to running on trails may fall. I did not need it but bring salty snacks just in case
