What to do and see in California, United States: The Best Room Escape Games

September 30, 2021 Karren Gelb

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

My friends and I got to test the virtual version of Miss Jezebel last Saturday, and we had an awesome experience! We connected via Zoom, which 60Out linked us to a few minutes before our time, but we weren't really sure what to expect. Fortunately, the entire game proceeded incredibly smoothly, as we were able to move around by way of looking through the web cam (or phone camera) of the host streamer and play the part of 6 minds talking to our surrogate actor. It was pretty easy to move around the room virtually, giving instructions, all while working together to try to spot out clues and decipher puzzles. The handicap of not being able to sprad out was balanced out by the ability to jot down notes from our own desks, and the actor playing our collective surrogate was also pretty entertaining in the part of a detective in over his head on a secretly investigative date with a suspected killer! This brings us to Miss Jezebel herself. What a delightful, raunchy, hilarious joy she was! The interactions with her brought an element of immersive theater and improv to the room, and she also served as a useful and fluid reminder of the time. He crude jokes and sinister demeanor were always perfectly in character, and we seemed to spend as time laughing as much as we did figuring out the puzzles. The escape room itself featured a nice mix of challenging but not overly difficult puzzles. Again, the restriction to only a single point of view did require a little more time to decipher out each clue, as our camera had to pan to specific props and hold for a few seconds before moving on, but we never really had any issues encountering a puzzle that was inhibited by the web format. Fortunately, we did solve the puzzle, leading to a thrilling finale. This was our first-ever virtual escape room, and we had an absolute blast. During these social distancing times, Miss Jezebel (Cyber Edition) provides a great way for people to spend meaningful social time together while enjoying and being part of an entertaining show! Well done to the 60Out team!

We kept being surprised when we'd finish a puzzle and another wall would fall down and a new room would open up. Most rooms seem to have 2 rooms--I think there were something around four here! Puzzles were not over the top challenge-wise and while I think there may have been one element that wasn't quite working our guide stopped by and either fixed it for us or forced it into the next stage. Details were amazing, everything felt well designed, the room definitely encouraged teamwork and there was a nice mix of mental and physical puzzles--would definitely recommend! Even if it is pricier than the typical escape room, it sets a very high standard. We also made it through several sets of almost fake endings--suspect most groups will be able to escape in the nick of time :D

We did the Skull Witch with 2 teens and 3 adults - it was a great way to entertain everyone on a holiday get together. The sets were amazing and authentic looking and awesome sound effects. The puzzles were very challenging. The designers put a lot of effort into making things look authentic and the technology they put into it is amazing. This one is a little scary so should be at least high school age.

Trapped Escape Room

Trapped! Escape Room has been a premier escape room company in Southern California since 2015. Trapped! has now expanded to San Dimas and Las Vegas offering some of the most exciting and immersive rooms in the area.

Our group has done a number of escape rooms and we all agreed that the production value at Trapped Escape Room is top notch. It felt like a team from Disney had a million dollar budget to create this experience. We did the room Down the Rabbit Hole. It was beautifully designed, the puzzles were creative, and it had just the right amount of difficulty. Seasoned escape room players should have a tough time without hints and beginners have a chance if they request hints. I highly recommend Trapped Escape Room.
