Have visited the Minster before but as we were staying in Beverley for a few days we had the opportunity to spend longer exploring this wonderful building and its many artifacts. We were lucky to also manage to get tickets to visit the roof of the building where you can see how the it was constructed and its early and more recent areas of renovation. Our guides on the roof tour were Graham and Sue and they were splendid. There was nothing that they didn't know about this building and spent over an hour ensuring that we all had the opportunity to take photographs and ask as many questions as we liked. They were also a hysterical double act!! We could wax lyrical about the Minster itself but there really is only one way to appreciate it and that is to come and see it for yourselves. It has everything you could ask for including great historical items such as the tomb of Henry Percy and great relics including the grave of St John of York. The Guides in the Minster are super too as they point out all the things that you would miss if you were not aware such as the carved Head of Edward I and his wife the stone musicians and the upside down archer. A real delight! No admission, only donation, which is unusual these days, guides that truly are enthusiastic about your visit and a great little shop too. If you're in the area don't miss it!!

Beverley Westwood

Reviewed By geoffreyb611 - Beverley, United Kingdom

This is common pasture land used by the local community. In summer months animals do inhabit the Westwood and drivers are asked to use care. There is something for everyone except no toilets. When I was young the family use to visit for the day with a picnic and play cricket or just kick a ball around. It also has a golf club on so be careful were you walk. There are trails for kids to run up and down all day long. On weekends and bank holidays in summer there will be Burgess ice cream on sale and on most days a hot dog/burger van who also does healthy salads and teas. I continue to visit to walk the dog a very popular place for that and you are also next to the race course well worth a visit if you have never been. You cannot camp or lite fires or park more then sort of 10 metres from the road to avoid damaging the environment. It can be a good cheap day out for the family provided the weather is kind.

Beverley Racecourse

A visit to Beverley Racecourse is a seriously good day out, a fact that the people of Beverley have been quite rightly proud of for over 300 years. Set in the stunning surroundings of The Westwood, the racecourse hosts horse racing between April and September every year. We have 19 race meetings in total, 11 of which feature extra entertainment and fun, from the family-themed May Day with a petting zoo and funfair rides to the glamour of Ladies' Day. For the racing fan, our Very British Raceday in June with its two feature races for the country's best two-year-old horses sees them battle it out in a fast and furious contest up our infamous uphill 5 furlong sprint (a furlong being about 660 feet for the as-yet uninititated.) There's always a warm welcome at Beverley, and whether you prefer to bring the family with a picnic and a rug or your friends for an afternoon of fun and catching up, you'll find lots of like-minded people enjoying the day and the excitement of watching your horse thundering home. Tickets in advance are much the cheapest way to visit and can be bought via our website, along with lots more information about all of our racedays. Booked online as it books up quickly and it was simple to book. We forgot to take our waiver forms in but that's not a problem as you can quickly fill them in there. You can book an hour and then also get a second hour at a reduced rate. My tip is unless your super fit 1 hour is plenty. The slides are fun and there are different parts to the inflatable. I feel it isn't as big as other centres but it's a nice hour. Staff were friendly and helpful. The centre is clean and tidy as are the rest rooms. There is a small cafe upstairs and downstairs. If you sit upstairs you have a good view of the areana which was good for my wife as she didn't bounce. We will definetly bounce again.
