What to do and see in Bergen, Western Norway: The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

August 22, 2021 Giuseppe Pratt

The colorful Norwegian city of Bergen is also a gateway to majestic fjords. Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf will give you a sense of the local culture – take some time to snap photos of the Hanseatic commercial buildings, which look like scenery from a movie set. Don’t breathe too deeply when you visit the outdoor fish market, a reminder of the city’s role in early fish trade. Ferry across a fjord to Lysøen, where the former villa of 19th-century composer Ole Bull will captivate you with fairytale charm.

Discover our beautiful store filled with an exclusive collection of knitwear for men, women & children inspired by the landscape of the West Coast of Norway and the vibrant city of Bergen.

After purchasing a beautiful sweater on a previous trip, I was anxious to visit the shop again. This time, I discovered the gorgeous wool & silk scarves. I didn't even realize each scarf's design was actually an image from a Norwegian landscape until Susan pointed it out. Love the designs & quality of the pieces, and, somehow, it makes each piece even more special when you mean the designer, herself.

They had so many fantastic pieces that choosing what to get was really hard. The exhibition they had was really cool and fun, and the atmosphere in the shop was exactly the kind of open and playful place that invites you to browse the art for ages. Strongly recommended!

Heim Bryggen

HEIM is a tiny shop focusing on nordic design, art and homeware. You’ll find unique items from local and Norwegian artists and designers, as well as some international products. You’re guaranteed to find a perfect gift at HEIM. Located at the historic Bryggen in Bergen, Norway.

Reviewed By glassparade - Hurst, United States

I visited HEIM in December of 2019 after following them on Instagram for several months. In December they had their regular shop as well as a Christmas market booth and I was able to pick up lots of goodies at both. They have a good selection of Scandinavian chocolates and candies, lovely artisanal candles and personal grooming goods, Norwegian made condiments like hot salt and spicy hot sauces, art and literature from local artists - if you’re looking for a unique, thoughtful souvenir of your trip to Norway, something well beyond keychains and fridge magnets, you’ll want to visit HEIM! The owners of the shop clearly select their inventory with care and consideration, everything there is special. I can’t wait to go back and meet shop dog Luca and give the newly added artisanal ice creams a try - and have another great conversation with Jeanette :) If you’re headed over to Bryggen - and who misses out on that?? - then just pop into the alleys behind the shopfronts and check out HEIM and the other local shops. They’re all the true treasures of Bryggen! And if you have questions before you go, they’re happy to help you on Instagram, just shoot them a DM! Friendly and helpful.
