What to do and see in Bangkok, Thailand: The Best Bodies of Water

May 19, 2021 Russell Mellin

Golden palaces, floating markets, majestic porcelain-laid spires…you've never seen a capital city quite like Bangkok. Visit Pratunam or Siam Square for premium shopping, then unwind in the European-style gardens of Dusit. Thon Buri is home to the awesome Wat Arun temple, and over in Phra Nakhon, you’ll find the Wat Pho temple of the Reclining Buddha. Savor mango sticky rice at a food stall before taking in the gilded splendor of the Grand Palace.

It was our last day in Bangkok and we wanted to have a chill day. Our guide recommended we take a private canal tour (not a floating market) on a traditional long boat. We headed over to the pier which was about a 5 min walk from our hotel by the river and away we went. The driver always flashed us friendly and inviting smiles but he did not speak a word of English. But really it is a canal tour we could figure it out for ourselves. We did have to wear lifejackets and the seats were low and made of wood. Not bad for an hour ride but could have been very comfortable if it was much longer. Then we first started and on our way back to the pier we had to go threw a larger spot on the river to get to the canals. The water was very choppy and we got a little wet but it was only about 3min each way. Which was kind of nice how it was at least 30c. Once on the canals it was much calmer. Honestly the water is brown but it is in a canal where there are tons of boats. So it is not going to be baby blue. The tour is about an hour long and you get to see the back yards of locals and houses on stilts over the water. There is a few temples you pass. We also saw lots of birds, lizards, the odd person fishing, ladies selling things & people go on about their day. It was a really fun experience and if you have a space hour I would recommend it. I do not remember how much we paid for the private tour but I know it wasn't very much.

Like the water taxis (really water buses) on the river, these fast canal boats are a great way to explore parts of Bangkok that aren't visible from any other perspective. The rides are cheap and safe. It's also a really cool way to get to sort of see how the locals get around.
