Albert Ludwigs Universitat Freiburg

This prestigious university, which has educated such famous individuals as Erasmus and Max Weber, has expanded in recent years to include over 20,000 students.

57 years ago in September I registered at this university as a holder of a DAAD fellowship. I hung around the place for two semesters, attending a few courses, reading a lot, increasingly in German, going to public lectures — Martin Heidegger’s annual appearance in the Auditorium Maximum of Kollegiengebaeude II was the most memorable, and concentrating on meeting German students and improving my German. These last two I did mostly in the context of World University Service Deutschland, which met regularly in the Alte Universität on Bertholdstrasse (now the Uniseum). The university was and is first-rate, and I had a splendid time in and around its halls. One regret: the Henry Moore statue that used to be on Bertholdstrasse outside Kg II is no longer there.
