Aso-san, the symbol of Kumamoto Prefecture, is the largest compound volcano in Japan, situated in the central part of Aso Kuju National Park. The central cone group consists of five peaks, the highest 1592-meter Taka-dake, still active – – Naka-dake, Neko-dake, Eboshi-dake, and Kishima-dake. This mountain boasts arguably the largest caldera in the world, extending 25 kilometers in the north-south direction and 18 kilometers in the east-west direction. We spent a late morning and relaxing lunch here. Drove half an hour from hotel at Aso and there was parking with daily rate. Magnificent view of the open grassland where tourists like us can walkabout. I think it was about 1000 yen for a slow guided horse-ride for about 5-10 minutes (a great tourist experience nevertheless). Several choices for restaurants. The one we ate at was pretty good.
