The Earl's Garden

Reviewed By 227ianc - London, United Kingdom

These stunning gardens are designed as a series of interconnected rooms with their green oak Pagodas (one of which is architecturally decorated with antlers), water features and fountains and Oberon's Palace with its shell grotto inside. Opened in 2008 as a tribute to Thomas Howard, the 14th Earl of Arundel, the gardens have lush planting and different characteristics as you move from one of the 'rooms' to another, exploring the different spaces and hidden corners, while as a backcloth you can see Arundel Cathedral and the Church of St Nicholas over the hedges. The Earl's Garden leads onto other gardens - the rose and vegetable gardens and the glass houses. The Gardens are not to be missed and a delightful surprise to find on visiting the Castle, while there is also a new Water Garden, as a wildlife reserve, on the site of the Stew Ponds.

Outside and inside this is a wonderful Cathedral Church, honouring St. Mary the Virgin and St. Philip Howard. It is full of the most amazing sculptures and memorials. The cathedral is not old (1873) so all of the architecture is crisp and clean, but it follows traditional designs and looks so.much like the cathedrals of Notre Dame or Mont Saint Michel on the outside. The special features to look out for are: The stations of the cross The tomb of Saint Philip the Martyr The stunning altars Fabulous stained glass windows, especially the circular west window Two 12th Century large carvings of 'The Raising of Lazarus' The Tapestry and altar drapes 16th Century paintings of the Kings of England and Wales

Arundel Lido

In all honesty I shouldn’t be writing this review, as the Lido does not need publicity: it’s so popular that getting hold of tickets is difficult - which is not surprising as it is a lovely spot. Where else can you swim with such amazing views, in a beautiful warm pool? They opened early to alleviate lockdown, and it’s a huge success - every session is full, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The Bootcamp sessions are also good - outdoor circuits with a friendly bunch of fitness fans. Can’t wait for the Fido event! ????

St Nicholas' Church

Reviewed By 227ianc - London, United Kingdom

Opposite Arundel Cathedral is the Parish and Priory Church of St Nicholas, which also pops up above the views from the Castle gardens. The church dates from 1380 and has a beautiful 15th century pulpit and (currently closed because of the pandemic) the Fitzalan Chapel which is the private chapel of the Dukes of Norfolk, the premier Roman Catholic family in England. Thus, unusually, one building houses spaces for Anglican and for Roman Catholic worship. A relatively simple church in terms of its architecture, inspirational and worth exploring. You are best to research it in advance because leaflets and visitor information has been removed due to pandemic precautions, but well done for being open.
