Eglise Notre-Dame de Chatel-Montagne

Reviewed By Gordon_and_Sally_11 - Broken Hill, Australia

We were amazed to find only one other review in English on TripAdvisor of this impressive Romanesque church. In these days of rapid change and impermanence, the church was oddly comforting in its age, sheer size, 'solidity' and simplicity. The height of the church (about 12.5 metres), with its three levels of arcade was particularly impressive. We both loved the local granite used in the church's construction. Whilst normally fans of stained glass windows, we found the clear windows with their geometric or 'celtic' type designs quite lovely and in keeping with the simplicity of the church. We were fortunate to be there on a day without other visitors or parishioners, so we could enjoy this massive structure in peace, and watch the changing patterns of light stream through the few coloured glass windows and move across the floor. There is also an amazing clock, which according to an article on the Internet, was the result of a public subscription by the inhabitants of the municipality in the 1920's. The supplier was a clock-making company, Odobey Cadet, founded in 1858 in Morez, in the Jura. The mechanism is a reproduction of a German model from 1860 and was installed in 1927. Two granite counterweights drive the mechanism, the largest of 300kg being used for the bell. As if all this is not enough, the church is also situated in beautiful countryside!

We had an amazing day in the beautiful park. It offers a nice variety of attractions for young and old. Also it’s nice and clean. However what I don’t understand is that you can smoke in the park. But overall really nice!
