We were holidaying in the area and celebrating our anniversary with friends and decided to visit based on the excellent Tripadvisor reviews. Lou and her staff are very welcoming, the tapas dishes are excellent and when we thought the best bit was over, we then ordered dessert which was fantastic ! Thanks for a memorable lunch :)

Saturday lunch with friends, and someone had recommended the Duncombe Arms. What a find. A lovely building, beautifully decorated. The staff were welcoming and efficient. The food was lovely. We mixed between brunch menu and lunch menu, resulting in odd combinations, but that didn’t matter. Delicious. Highly recommended.

This restaurant, based upon this particular visit, promised much but delivered less than anticipated.Whilst the welcome was friendly enough to what was effectively a Saturday night, only half full restaurant, we were somewhat disappointed to be directed to a poorly located table between, and effectively adjacent to, the kitchen ‘pass’ and door through which the dirty plates were being taken. Not good. Sure, we could have refused but beginning an eagerly anticipated evening in such a way is not what anyone would really want - the table really should not have been offered. Other than this the restaurant offers a pleasant enough ambience and service throughout the meal was good. Our starters were somewhat mixed in quality. The beef was good, well-seasoned and presented. The scallops with minted pea purée was very poor - three small scallops on pea purée with a complete absence of mint flavour running through it. Very disappointing. The mains similarly mixed in terms of quality. The hake was tasty, but the monk fish reported as not particularly good. The chicken supreme was tender but the balance of the dish in terms of flavour not so good - the chicken and risotto did not marry together especially well (personal taste of course). What really was disastrous was the manner in which the main course was served. Instead of the usual style of serving higher-end food on quite large plates to allow each component’s flavour to be savoured, they were served in what were effectively very uninspiring, small bowls (pudding bowls) with the food in layers e.g. the hake over the vegetables, etc. This masked flavours and components. This was quite awful. In many ways, the sweets were the best course, with a nice enough cheese board too.Wine and drinks were, as is often the way in higher-end restaurants, very expensive with not necessarily the best quality. We were not offered coffee.Overall, a very disappointing experience for the cost, and therefore weak value-for-money, certainly compared with visits in the past.
