Museum Georg Schafer

The Spitzweg collection alone is worth the price of admission. There always seems to be a special exhibition, most of which are icing on the cake. It is not fair to compare the Museum Georg Schäfer with the big museums in Berlin and Munich, but it certainly compares favorably with most smaller museums.

Schweinfurt Rathaus

I loved walking to the Rathaus and central square daily to pick up fresh produce, flowers and bread from the local merchants. This is a great example of how towns are laid out in Europe--much more centralized and pedestrian-driven than American towns.

Deutsches Bunkermuseum

The 1. Schweinfurter Bunkermuseum is located in the Hochbunker A8, called Fichtel-und-Sachs-Bunker in The city of Schweinfurt. The Bunker was build 1941. 1983 The schelten was protected agains atomar weapons. Tour (ca. 75 Min.) for groups from 10 to 45 persons. .

This Bunker is privately owned. The plan is to create an apartment on the top floor and to break through the bomb-proof roof to use the space for a sun porch. It is easy to think of a thousand reasons why this is a bad idea, but... You have to be full of fantasy to conceive of such an idea. Since the owners conduct the tour, they combine a slight awkwardness with a thorough knowledge of the entire bunker system in the city and a love for this monster of a building. Plus each has a twinkle in the eye and a subtle sense of humor.
You will be amazed at how carefully thought out these bunkers were. How packed they were during raids and how the human needs of the occupants were cared for.
So why only four points? Well, it is not the Parthenon or the Sphinx. What it is a great way to understand how Schweinfurt survived repeated poundings and kept up its industrial production during the Second World War.
The bunker can induce claustrophobia if you have never been a spelunker, submariner or tank crewman.
Check the website to see when it is open for tours. I have been to the city for over 40 years and this was the first opportunity I had to see it.

Who would expect such quality entertainment in such a small city? I have attended events there over a period of 40 years. They have included classical and popular Concerts, plays, operas and various other entertainments. The theater holds some 600 people, the acoustics are great, the construction and decorations are tasteful and even the street parking is adequate. Not every show is to my taste, but I love to go when something appeals to me.

This is not a particularly pretty place, but it is much nicer than it was before the rennovations. Sometimes there are boats and barges docked there. Across the Main River is an ugly grain tower and a bit farther down stream is the small yacht club. What I found most attractive on the North Bank was the old crane for loading and unloading barges.

Silvana

Reviewed By kkibby43 - Madison, Alabama

The long winter months in Schweinfurt makes Silvana a great family destination for water activities. It offers a lap pool, diving board, waterslide, heated water lounge, and an outdoor heated pool. The other outdoor pools are seasonal and were not open during our visit but inside has plenty to offer. A cafe offers food and drink but there didn't appear to be a problem with bringing in your own. Wall lockers are included in the entrance fee and are kept neat and clean. It's not really fair to compare Silvana to other large indoor water parks in larger cities, it may be small in comparison but it's the best thing going in Schweinfurt. The cashier spoke passable English and the price was fair, we will definately return.
