This museum comprises a complex of old buildings & exhibits. the 'coal' museum itself is very interesting & the displays are well presented. We were particularly taken with the huge cooking pots, used to feed patients in hospital. We learnt about the way prisoners were used for their labour & their treatment as 'slaves'. Well worth a look, although not many exhibits have English translation. We had a very competent guide who took the time to explain the exhibits to us in excellent English.

- have camera with flash when taking picture in the mine, as it's a bit dark with limited number of lights

Sawahlunto Train Museum

We were in Sumatra to research a PoW railway & visited this small museum. It is small but has some interesting exhibits which all add to the rail history of this part of Sumatra. There was sufficient translation available for us to appreciate the old photographs & exhibits. We watched a short film which also filled in some gaps & had subtitles. The tourist railway doesn't run any more but there are old exhibits in the station yard. The staff were very pleasant & happy to help, giving us a few different brochures in English. There are some souvenirs for purchase. Definitely worth a look if you're interest in railway history.
