Padasjoen Tuomastornit

Reviewed By JariJK - Kouvola, Finland

This is a wonderful observation tower! It is free, it is always open and there is an extremely beautiful view to Lake Päijänne and Padasjoki Marina.
You can leave your car in the parking lot of Padasjoki DiscGolfPark or in the parking lot of Kullasmarina Holiday Villas. It is less than 400 meters from these parking lots to the observation tower. Follow signs "Maisematorni". The walking route is easier from the parking lot of Padasjoki DiscGolfPark. From there you can walk along a running track.
I think that this is "the must" sight if you visit Padasjoki!

Kelvenne Trail

The Kelvenne trail is situated in Päijänne National Park and is especially suitable for a day trip. The trail can be walked either from the south of the island (Kirkkosalmi) to the north (Likolahti) or vice versa. M/S Elbatar sails to Kelvenne Island from Padasjoki four times a week in July and once a week from Asikkala. Kelvenne Island can also be reached by water taxi from Padasjoki or by charter cruise (Asikkala, Padasjoki or Sysmä) during summer. The trail is suitable for hiking and Nordic walking and it is accessible from May to September. The path starts at Kirkkosalmi and it is marked with blue painted marks. Trail passes through beautiful esker and lake scenery. There are a number of sheltered bays which are beautiful places to rest, and there are also several campfire sites. Beside the esker landscape, the effects of the Ice Age can also be found in the form of kettle holes: one of the kettle holes has formed a small lake in the middle of Kelvenne Island!

This trail is situated on the island of Kelvenne, Lake Päijänne. The trail starts from Kirkkosalmi (the southernmost point of Kelvenne) and ends in Likolahti (the northernmost point of Kelvenne) and it is marked with blue signs. It is about 8-9 kilometers long and takes 2-3 hours. You can also hike to the other way from Likolahti to Kelvenne.
You see beautiful Forests, interesting kettle holes and nice lake views on the trail. However, there are so many trees that in most parts the scenery is covered with trees and you can't see the lake very well. Luckily there are very nice sandy Beaches on the route.
There are many campfire sites on the trail (Kirkkosalmi, Hinttolanhiekka, Nimetön, Koukunlahti, Karhunkämmen, Isohieta, Likolahti). However, it is forbidden to use them if the forest fire warning is in effect. Water in the lake is clean and tastes good but it should be boiled. There aren't any cafeterias or other services on the island. Dry toilets are at disposal near campfire sites but you have to have your own toilet papers with you.
This hiking trail isn't too congested. Most people come here with their own boats and they stay on Beaches. So you can hike almost alone. However, sometimes there may be many mosquitoes with you. So it is a good idea to have some repellent.
It is easy to get to the island with M/S Elbatar cruises from the harbor of Padasjoki in mid-summer (in July and early August). In winter there are cross-country skiing tracks from the harbor to the island over lake ice.
In 1967 they were going to build a bridge, an airport, a railway station etc. on the island. Luckily they didn't do that. Now the island is a paradise for all nature lovers!

Paijanne National Park

Reviewed By JariJK - Kouvola, Finland

Päijänne is the deepest (95 meters) and the 2nd largest (over 1,100 square meters) lake in Finland. It is 120 kilometers long. The capital of Finland (Helsinki) gets drinking water from Päijänne.
Päijänne National Park consists of lake areas and many Islands. Most people visit the national park by own boats. However, it is quite easy to visit Päijänne National Park without a boat, too.
You can drive from Padasjoki via Kellosalmi Bridge to Virmaila. It is the largest island on Lake Päijänne. The campfire place of Höysniemi is accessible by car.
Or you can drive via the road 314 (Vääksy-Sysmä) to Pulkkilanharju Ridge. There is a quite nice Pulkkilanharju Nature Trail in Asikkala (see separate reviews of that) there.
M/S Elbatar has scheduled cruises from the harbor of Padasjoki to Kelvenne Island in midsummer. See separate reviews of Kelvenne trail.
We visited the national park with a rowing boat, too. It is only about 1 km from Kullasniemi Holiday Villas (a rowing boat was included in the price of the villa) and less than 0.5 km from Mainiemi Caravan and Mainiemi Canoeing Center to Kalainsaari Island. There is a nice barbecue area on the southwestern part of the island.
Please, notice that there are dry toilets in the national park. However, you have to have own toilet papers with you.

Paijanne-Ilves Trail

The 13 km long Päijänne –Ilves trail is a connecting trail to the Evo hiking area. The path starts from Padasjoki Harbour and ends at the car park for Tarusjärvi at the Evo hiking area. The trail is suitable for both hiking and Nordic walking and is marked with yellow painted marks or ribbons. The trail goes through varying village and forest scenery and passes by swamps, ponds and fields. Points of interest along the trail are the Cudgel War Battle Monument, as well as a large boulder close to the end of the trail.

Around 13 kilometer long trail from Padasjoki Harbour to Lake Iso-Tarus. The trail is marked with yellow dots and ribbon. Fairly easy trail but after 11 kilometers theres few steeper and rocky hills and you have to carry your bike. You can also go around the harder parts by the road, but the roads are not marked as alternative route yet. Therefore you have to have map with you if you want to go your own way. A map is a good thing to have with you anyway. There's a lean-to Nuijamiehenkolo 10 kilometer from the starting point. The area is very beautiful and theres a small stream. In the end of the trail at Lake Iso-Tarus theres a beach and a camping area.

Padasjoki DiscGolfPark

Reviewed By JariJK - Kouvola, Finland

Padasjoki disc golf course is situated in the wooded area of the Kullasvuori recreation ground. The area is quite hilly and there are 18 holes there. The observation tower named Padasjoen Tuomastornit is situated in the same region.
The parking place of the disc golf course is situated behind a school (Kullasvuoren koulu). There is a small sign after the school from Kellosalmentie Street. The parking place is sandy and quite bumpy. Besides, there are some trees and a streetlight in the middle of the parking place. So be careful.
The other parking place is situated on the other side of the hill, next to Kullasmarina Holiday Villas. But it is quite a long trail to the teeing area number one from there.
This disc golf course is very variable and beautiful. So it is one of my favorite disc golf courses in Finland.

M/S Elbatar

Reviewed By JariJK - Kouvola, Finland

M/S Elbatar cruises both scheduled cruises and charter cruises on Lake Päijänne. There are scheduled cruises to Kelvenne (Päijänne National Park), Vääksy and Kuhmoinen.
Charter cruises aren't too expensive either (250 euros for the first hour and 160 euros for next hours in 2016). There is a salon for 50 people and also deck seats for 50 people on the boat.
The tiny restaurant of this small boat serves ice-cream, pizza slices, pasties, sandwiches, drinks (also alcohol) etc.
We had a very nice cruise to Kelvenne. On that island we had a break for hiking and swimming on a sandy beach. Views were absolutely beautiful. We had an immemorial summer day!
